I let out a soft breath. "So they snuck in over that, notthroughthe gate."

"So they didn't have help?" she asked.

I exhaled out my nose. "I can't assume anything, but that’s what it suggests." Climbing up a tree, over a limb and down again, was a hard way to put us off the scent. Literally.

"Can you tell how many came over there?"

Silence fell for a moment. "I can only smell him. Maybe one other."

"Nothing near the gate?" They could have climbed over and let the others in.

"Not unless they've cleaned up afterward," she said.

"That would be difficult without drawing attention to themselves," I said slowly. "We need to assume the others came in another way. Let's keep going."

"Okay." She didn't let go of my hand, nor was I in a hurry to let go of hers.

My mind turned over while we moved. Part of it was thinking about her, while the rest was focusing on what we found and what it meant. I wished someone had left a tiger alive. We might have been able to get them to talk. At least we could have tried.

I wasn't above hoisting them up over the sand and leaving them to wait and be eaten. Of course, I'd take them down if they talked. I wasn't a monster.

We walked for a time in silence.

"I can't smell anything else strange," she said after a while. "I feel like the trail is getting colder."

I was getting the same feeling. "Okay, let's go back and follow the scent out to the street. Hades willing, it will lead us right to the rest of them."

"You think there's more?" She followed me back and stood beside the gate while I pulled out another key and unlocked it.

"Without a doubt," I said. "There's likely to be several."

"What are the chances they're lying in wait?" she asked.

I flashed her a smile and pushed the gate open. "A number higher than zero."

A streetlight illuminated her face as she grimaced. "That doesn't fill me with confidence."

"It's not supposed to." I swung the gate closed behind us. "It should fill you with caution."

Saying that led to another thought—one of me filling her with my cock. If I wasn't careful, I would drive myself crazy thinking about her.

"I could never have too much of that," she said.

I paused and blinked, before I realised what she meant.Caution.

"Right. No one could." I swallowed. My mouth was suddenly dry.

"Which way?" I asked. I could think of a few ways: her on top, me on top. For a start.

"Down," she said.

Okay, down worked too.

Oh, down the hill, away from the Residence.

"All roads lead down from here," I pointed out.

"That way then." She waved and started off so quickly I had to trot a few steps to catch up.
