"No, he's right," Kerina said. She stepped out of the shadows, right under the illumination of a streetlight. "Bain, is that you, you big ox?"

I don't think I've ever been so relieved as I was when Bain joined Kerina in the light.

"Sweet Hades," I said under my breath.

"Dex?" Bain peered into the darkness.

“The one and only." I grinned. "Plus Devlin and Yard."

Bain exhaled in relief. "We've been looking for you for hours. I was starting to think you'd been recaptured, or worse." He sniffed. "Smells like worse happened."

I grimaced. "Yeah, but we're alive."

Latika, Conor, and Knox hovered nearby, just out of the light.

"We shouldn't stand around here," Knox said. "We got word Seth is moving Viva out of the city. And um," he cleared his throat, "Gwendolyn is dead."

I looked toward Devlin in time to see him shrug.

"Saves having to divorce her," he said. In spite of that, he seemed genuinely unsettled at the news.

"Is Viva—" I swallowed.

"Not okay," Knox said. “My contact said she was heard screaming."

My hands clenched into fists. If Seth harmed a hair on her head…

"Where are they taking her?" I asked.

"Uncertain," Bain said tightly. I heard a world of emotion in that one word. He cared about her as much as I did. As much as Knox did. "There's talk about a location in the lower city."

I nodded. "It's a trap. To catch us again."

"Probably," Bain agreed, "but if Viva is at risk, I'll take the chance."

"So will I," Knox said immediately.

"Me too," I admitted.

"Dex," Kerina warned.

"We'll find a place for the Alpha to be safe," I said firmly. "Then we go after her. Whatever it takes."

"Whatever it takes," Bain agreed.

Devlin huffed. "I should go too—"

"No," I said quickly. "One of us needs to be safe, just in case."

For a moment, I thought he'd argue, but then he pressed his lips together. "Fine. Kill that Seth guy if you can."

"That's the plan," I said brightly. I would like to kill him slowly, but I suspected it would be safer to do it quickly. Him and his followers.

"Bring me back his head so we can hang it on the gate," Devlin added.

I blinked. "Really?"

Devlin chuckled. "Hades no. "Knowing he's dead will be enough."
