"We could ask them," Kerina suggested. "If they lie, I'll know."

"Only if they actually answer," I pointed out. "They're not very likely to do that, I don't think. Although, if we ask, it would be uppermost in their minds. I might be able to get a read on them then."

Dex nodded. "We can try that. In the meantime, are you sure Viva is on the side of this Seth guy?"

"I don't know," I said, my expression as bleak as my tone. "She wasn't friendly to him until he mentioned the witches. Now, I think she sees the potential, anything is possible. Before today—I don't think so. She had multiple opportunities to hand us over to the hemitheos. She even killed a few."

Devlin smiled. "Good for her."

We all looked toward him.

He shrugged. "We don't owe the fuckers anything, except death or the rest of their lives in a cell. Theyaretrying to overthrow me, don't forget."

"All's fair in love and war," Kerina said softly.

"Exactly." Devlin looked approving. "She gets it."

"We all get it," Dex said. "What we really need to get right now is out of here. We can find out what Viva and Seth are up to after that."

Devlin sighed. "We should have learnt not to trust beautiful women." He blinked, then shot Kerina an apologetic look. "Present company excluded. I'm sure you're very trustworthy."

"I would trust her with my life," I said firmly. "And I have, more than once." She was one of the few I knew would always have my back, and I always had hers.

Kerina looked unconcerned. "I am extremely trustworthy, unless you're the enemy." She cocked her head at Devlin.

His face turned pink. "I'm not," he snarled. "Why would I be in here if I was?"

"You wouldn't," she agreed. "But I had to check."

He looked furious, then blinked and visibly calmed. "I forgot, you can see lies. Does that make you a hemitheos too?"

"I think the line between what they can do and what I can do is blurry," she admitted. "But I consider myself a regular shifter."

"Me too," I agreed. I didn't mind if anyone wanted to describe my physique or strength as godlike, but I didn't want to be anactualgod. Or the child of a god. Life was complicated enough.

"Good." Devlin nodded. "Because if anyone is a god around here—"

"It's me," Dex finished for him. He grinned.

Devlin gave him a dry look, then reached over and socked him on the arm.

Dex rubbed his arm and laughed.

"I see being confined has started to impact on your sanity," I said dryly.

"They've been like this the entire time." Kerina gave a long suffering shake of her head.

"To be fair, we're always like this," Dex said.

"You are," Devlin agreed.

If Dex stuck out his tongue at Devlin, I wouldn't have been even slightly surprised, but he didn't. He just smiled.

"I've been tempted to punch them both in the dick a few times," Kerina told me. "But then I remember who pays my wages."

"No one right now," I said. "They don't exactly have access to the Vault's coffers."

"Good point." Kerina grinned.
