"Yeah, but if you weren't near me, they wouldn't have taken you too," I said finally. "You would have been fine. You have a hard head." That was a lie. Not the part about having a hard head, but the part about being okay. He'd be dead now, or at least soon. And he'd be in pain. A shit load of it.

"I'm glad they did," he said firmly. "Otherwise you'd be alone."

I winced as we went over another bump. "If the next words out of your mouth suggest I'm defenceless…"

"I wouldn't dream of it," he said with absolute conviction. "You're far from it, but there's safety in numbers."

"Yeah, I guess so," I said. "Do you think the others are okay?" They could be dead for all I knew, but I sensed they weren't. I would feel it if Knox was dead. Wouldn't I? And Dex.

"The hemitheos weren't after them," Bain said. "The balloons were just a distraction."

"Except the bit where they fired on you," I said bitterly.

"They wanted to hurt someone badly enough you would have to fix them," Bain said. "I doubt they gave a shit who it was."

"Maybe," I said, not convinced. "Maybe they knew we—"

"We what?" he asked. He traced circles on the back of my hand with a finger.

"We're close," I finished. Thank Hades he couldn't see me blush.

"Are we close?" he asked.

"Whatever you want to call it," I said. "You're hot for me. We like each other's company. Whatever."

"All of the above," Bain said. "If we weren't in the back of a truck, on the way to the city, I would show you."

Fuck. That made my pussy throb. "I— Wait. What makes you think we're on the way to the city?"

"Just a guess," he admitted. "It makes sense they would take you there. Me too, I suppose, given my connection to Dex."

That sounded like a good reason for them to kill him, to me. Thank fuck they hadn't. If that was their plan, they'd have to think again. Bain wasn't that easy to kill. Neither was I, come to that.

"We'll be okay," he said, as if reading my thoughts.

"We better be," I growled. "I've just started to live. And you haven't seen a bunch of movies I'm going to make you watch someday."

He chuckled. "Should I be worried? We might not have the same taste in movies."

"I'm not going to make you watch romantic ones, if that's what you're worried about." He was definitely the action hero movie type of guy. Maybe the ones with superheroes. I was partial to those myself.

"I'll watch whatever you want to watch," he said softly. "But I prefer the ones with car chases. Watching them, not living them."

I snorted. Yeah, that did seem to be our lives right now. Cars, trucks, motorbikes, balloons. It was like a spy movie or something. Although most movies didn't have three love interests, worse luck. The world definitely needed more of those. Maybe when this was over, I'd hunt down a screenwriter and tell them my story.

Although, no one would believe it. I wasn’t sure if I did.

I cocked a head at the Bain-shaped shadow. "Are you telling me you don't enjoy all the excitement? At least a tiny bit?"

"It keeps life interesting," he admitted. "I've never been one to sit around doing nothing."

"I've noticed that about you," I said. "What do you do in your spare time? Do you have spare time?" I couldn't remember having seen him sit down to do anything but eat.

"Once in a while," he replied. "I usually train."

"Ahh. Train yourself or others?" I asked.

"Both," he replied. "There are always new guards coming through. Or old ones who need a refresher."
