“I was beginningto think you’d given up on me entirely.” Remy’s gold-hued eyes sparked with interest as he stood in the center of the garden.

The fading sunlight outlined his beautifully formed body, his black button-down shirt clinging to muscles that deserved to be on display. The onyx slacks encasing his legs did nothing to hide his… assets.

I jerked my focus back to his face before I could get myself into trouble.

“Maybe not entirely, but pretty damn close. At least until you decide you’re done withholding information from me.”

“I am. Whatever you want to know, I’ll tell you, Fury.”

“Well, you’re about to get that chance right now.” I steeled myself, reluctant to voice my suspicions so close to the school, but there really wasn’t much choice since we were consigned to the campus. “I need you to tell me whatever you know about Day. And Brodgan.”

“What I know about them? What is there to know?”

I huffed and rolled my eyes. “If I knew that, Remy, would I be here asking you? They’re just... I don’t know, something about them and whatever they have going on raises my hackles.”

“What does whatever they’re doing have to do with you?”

“I don’t know for sure that it does, but with Day requesting more sessions with me and Brodgan, I don’t want to be caught unawares. You’ve been here longer than anyone, so I thought you might know more about them.”

“Well, I don’t know anything that will be of any use to you, but I can tell you the impressions I’ve gotten from them if it’ll help.”

“I’ll take whatever you’ve got. Anything might prove useful in a session.”

Remy ran a hand over his scruffy jaw, brow furrowed and eyes going distant. “I don’t remember any instances of Day acting strangely, but then I didn’t have extended interaction with her while I was a student. I will say Alvina has always seemed decidedly unhappy with her job. From the time she came to my house to drop her favorite Welcome-to-Divinity-Prep bomb, there was an air of... I don’t know how to describe it. It’s not quite disdain, but—”

“General displeasure?”

“Yes, that’s it exactly.”

“What about Brodgan?”

“I had a number of sessions with him when I was a student. Par for the course for a death god, I suppose. In fact, all the students with strong or potentially lethal powers ended up in his office at least once a week.”

“And he never gave you any weird vibes or anything?”

“Thea… has he tried anything with you in your sessions? Made you uncomfortable?”

“The sessions make me extremely uncomfortable, but not for the reasons you’re thinking. He just pokes and prods and digs into things I’d rather leave buried.”

“Well, that just sounds like therapy to me.”

“I know, but the way he responds to my answers is unsettling. I can’t really explain it, which I know isn’t helpful.”

“No, not really. With me, he was always a bit remote, but still inviting enough to make me feel comfortable about opening up to him.”

“Did he have anything to do with you being recalled to Divinity?”

“Probably. But that’s likely a good thing. The initial decision would have been to imprison me or something to that effect.”

“Imprison?” I was taken aback. It was horrible that something like that had been a possibility for Remy, but all I could see was myself in an orange jumpsuit in some kind of prison for gods once they found out the truth about me. My pulse started to race, my head spinning.

“Hey, are you okay? Thea?” Remy finally gave up whatever restraint had been holding him back and crossed the garden to grasp my arms. “What is it?”

“Nothing, I–my head just hurts.”

“Do you need to lie down?”
