You could always wear the pendant Sam gave you. That’s its entire purpose.

That wasn’t even on the edge of the table. Putting it on was tantamount to a declaration of forgiveness, and I wasn’t ready for that yet.

“Sorry, Brodgan caught up with me in the hall.”

“Uh oh. Causing trouble again?” Rocky’s words were light and matched the mischievous grin on her face. She nudged Jesse, who gave her a tender smile reserved only for her.

“Maybe a little. It’s more fun that way, right?”

“I definitely like it when you cause a little trouble, Red.” Darrio’s voice as he came up behind me sent a shiver down my spine, like he’d run a fingertip down my bare flesh.

“Glad you’ve both decided to join us. Now can we get to work? Some of us want to pass these damn tests.” River was clearly uninterested in our banter, her books cracked open and her notepaper already covered with several lines of text.

Darrio and I took seats and pulled out our materials while everyone else returned their attention to their own. Nobody wanted to risk pissing River off.

“Everything okay with Brodgan?” Darrio kept his voice low, his lips close enough to my ear that I could feel little puffs of air as he spoke.

“I think so.” I shifted so that our heads were closer together and we could talk without disrupting the others. I glanced over and caught River glaring at me. Okay, without disrupting them much. “He said Day wants me to see him more frequently. I don’t think it’s a punishment, but I can never be too sure with them.”

“I don’t like this, Red. I thought your sessions were going well.”

“So did I, but I guess I was misreading the situation. He said I have to be ready for the next round of tests. Apparently, we have to use our abilities more and I need more practice.”

“Hmm. I should probably practice, too. Want to be my guinea pig?” Did I want my very own sex god to use his masculine wiles on me? Um, yes, please!

“Seriously, you two?” River’s snappy demand pulled me back from the brink of getting lost in the fantasy of Darrio using his ability on me well into the wee hours of the morning.

“Sorry.”

“Our bad, Riv.” Thoroughly chastised, I tried to focus on my book, but my mind wandered back to Alvina and her insistence that I train more with Brodgan.

Surely there had to be other students who needed as much–if not more–help, yet she was so focused on me getting extra assistance.

I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something about the attention made me feel uneasy. I needed to find out more about her. Unfortunately, there was only one person I could ask.

Remy had been here for years, left to go out into the real world, only to wind up back here when he couldn’t–or wouldn’t–control himself. Unbeknownst to Alvina, Remy and I had the same power, so that was even more reason for me to ask him.

But just like with Sam, I was still angry with him for all of his bullshit.

How crazy was it that Varon and I were actually on better terms than Remy and I? Than Sam and I, even?

As soon as the decision to talk to Remy took hold in my head, any chance I’d had of focusing on my studies was shot to hell. Rather than remain in the library and stare into space, I grabbed my books and shoved them into my bag. Darrio raised a brow, obviously curious at my sudden exodus.

“I have to go take care of something. I’ll tell you all about it later, okay?”

“Alright. Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Can’t promise that. You should know that by now.”

“You’re right. Don’t do anything lethal.”

“That’s better, I should be able to stick to that one.” As long as Remy didn’t put his fucking foot in his mouth again. Had there ever been anyone so adept at saying the exact wrong thing as him?

I stood, but didn’t make it a step before Darrio grabbed my hand and pulled me closer to him. “Come find me when you’re done, okay?”

“I will.” I leaned down and kissed him, a lingering peck that was probably a bad idea. All it did was flood me with heat and memories of the night before. I pulled back before I could do something stupid, like trace his full lower lip with the tip of my tongue. “See you guys later,” I said to the others, giving them a half wave as I hurried for the exit.

Time to find a death god.
