They started shouting and saying no.

Geli then called them ignorant and stupid.

‘Sophia, these idiots are refusing to apologise for their behaviour. What do we call people who do that?Arseholes. How do you say arseholes in Italian?’

I paused. Geli was asking me to insult them to their faces. This was a small town, so if I did I’d probably make some enemies.

Fuck it.

After the way they’d treated me, they bloody deserved it. And I had no plans to come in this shop again anyway. I refused to give them my money.

‘Stronze!’ I said, looking them all straight in the eye. The women gasped, putting their hands to their mouths.

‘Time to go, ladies!’ giggled Geli. We walked out laughing. Well, everyone except Daphne.

‘Was thatreallynecessary?’ Daphne snarled.

‘Absolutely!’ Geli lifted up her hand for me to high-five.

‘I do my shopping there regularly, so insulting them is going to make my life very difficult.’

‘What you do not understand, Daphne,’ Geli raised an eyebrow, ‘is that just like they have insulted Sophia, they have also insulted you too.’

‘Me?’ Daphne frowned.

‘Sì. Said that you are a stuck-up lady who thinks she is better than everyone else in the town and that your husband should leave you and marry the woman he used to date who lives here. I forgotten her name…maybe Guilia?’

‘No!’ Daphne’s mouth dropped open. ‘They saidthat?’

Geli nodded.

‘Those gossiping little…’ Daphne stormed back into the shop with a face like thunder. We quickly followed behind to see what she was going to do. ‘Vaffanculo!’ she screamed, sticking her middle finger up at them. Daphne then walked out of the shop calmly.

Geli, Holly and I all stared at each other, our eyes wide. I couldn’t believe she’d just told them all to fuck off.

‘Wow…Daphne…I am surprised…’ Geli was still trying to get her head around it too.

‘That felt good,’ Daphne exhaled.

‘But I thought you didn’t like swear words?’ God bless Holly for asking what the rest of us were already thinking.

‘There is a time and a place for such language and that was it. I thought my husband was at least being discreet about his illicit affair with that woman, but now the whole town is gossiping about me, it’s time to put on the boxing gloves. She’s welcome to the cheatingtesta di cazzo. I’m getting a divorce. Goodnight.’

And just like that, Daphne was gone. Walking with her head held high.

We were all still rooted to the spot in shock.

‘Did that really just happen?’ said Holly.

‘I believe it did,’ I replied.

‘And there I was thinking she was all bougie with the perfect life.’ Holly shook her head.

‘Nobodyhas a perfect life.’ I turned to Geli. ‘Did you really hear them say all of that?’

‘More or less… that was the polite version. I do not like those women in there. They are bad. And I also do not like the way the husband make a fool out of Daphne. Yes, she is snooty, but she does not deserve to be humiliated.’

‘Humiliated?’ said Holly.
