“You’re right,” Jade says. “Let’s go get pampered.”

???

After spending the better half of the afternoon preparing for the gala, I was able to sneak away a handful of times to send off a few texts home, but neither my sister nor my parents replied.

“Are you okay?” Taylor asks, snapping me back to the food in front of me. “You suddenly seem out of it.”

Looking back up at her, I pressed my lips together. “Sorry, just a lot on my mind,” I replied, pushing the food around my plate with my fork. “Seem to have lost my appetite.”

Redirecting my attention to my phone, I blew a puff of air between my lips.

“Still can’t get a hold of anyone back home?” Jade asks, sipping her drink.

“No, and now I’m really worrying,” I said, tugging my lip between my teeth.

“I know hun, but you can’t jump to conclusions. You’ll drive yourself crazy,” Taylor advised. “Let’s go to our hair appointment and if you still haven’t received anything back, try calling again.”

In my heart, I knew she was right, but I couldn’t shake this feeling. “I guess you’re right,” I nod, offering a forced smile.

Back in the room a few hours later, the girls continued to talk and joke around while my thoughts remained elsewhere. Turning up some music, Jade got the party started while we got ready.

Unzipping her garment bag, Jade revealed her burgundy and purple off-the-shoulder dress. “I love this dress,” she sighed, with awe as she stared at.

“That’s gorgeous. Almost looks like a wedding dress,” Taylor declared.

“Actually it is,” Jade announced.

“No way. You bought a wedding dress?” Taylor asked, admiring the material.

“Generally, wedding dresses are white, yes, but times are changing and so is fashion,” she beamed.

“So you bought a wedding dress?” Taylor chuckled.

“Don’t say it like that. Why can’t I have a wedding dress? Just because I’m not getting married doesn’t mean I don’t want to look and feel my best at an event like this. Besides. It was too nice to leave at the store,” she muttered, and Taylor and I laughed.

“Typical Jade,” Taylor teased.

“So, what’s everyone else wearing?”

Taylor's lips curled as she unzipped her garment bag. Slipping out a hunter green V-neck dress with a slit leading straight up the side, Jade couldn’t hide her approval. “That’s going to look absolutely gorgeous with your hair,” she observed. “What about shoes?”

Taylor showed us a killer pair of green heels.

Jade swooned. “What about you, Steph? What are you wearing?”

Feeling like the odd one out, my dress felt like nothing compared to Taylor's and Jade’s gowns. “I’m wearing a midnight blue party dress with crystal sparkles. You’re welcome to have a look. It’s in the second garment bag behind Taylor’s,” I explained, feeling like I might have underspent.

Unzipping my garment bag, Jade peeked inside. “Steph. It’s beautiful,” she sighed, placing her hand over her heart. Have you tried it on?”

“Absolutely. I had to make sure the length wouldn’t catch in my wheels.”

Taylor took a step back. “I never would have thought about that,” she admitted, taking in the length of my dress.

“Does that make the whole dress shopping thing harder?” Jade asked with curiosity.

“Sometimes,” I shrugged. “But it’s not like I wear dresses this fancy all that often.”

Turning to face me, Taylor's features softened. “Not to bring him up again, but what style of wedding dress were you looking at for your wedding to Nick?”
