CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

A Handful of Times

Stephanie

Waking up sore this morning, I couldn’t pinpoint if I was uncomfortable from laying on the lounger for the duration of the movie or if it had to do with the evening air, but whatever it was, I was aching something fierce today.

Hopping into the shower, I turned the heat up as high as I could tolerate in order to let my body soak up all the warmth. As the water reached all my aches and pains, my level of discomfort wasn’t enough to tamper down my cheerful mood while I sifted through Logan and I’s interactions from the night before.

Unable to contain the smile that’s permanently taken residence on my face, Taylor smiles with approval. “Look at you all smiles this morning. Wouldn’t have anything to do with those beautiful roses, now would it?”

“It might,” I shrugged. “I’ve never received flowers like that before.”

“Really? Nick never bought you flowers?” Taylor asked, rummaging through her bag.

“Nothing that fancy,” I admitted. “If he brought home flowers, it was something he picked up on his way out of the grocery store. Not that I am complaining. Flowers are flowers. It’s supposed to be the thought that counts, right? You know, he brought me the biggest bunch of mixed flowers in late October before we broke up? I bet they were because he was feeling guilty. His baby mama must have told him by then that he’d slipped up.”

“Who slipped up?” Jade asked, entering the room with her dress for tonight’s gala.

“Nick.”

“Ew. Why are we still talking about him?” She asked, hanging her garment bag on our trolley.

“Taylor was just asking if Nick ever bought me flowers like the ones Logan gave me last night,” I explained, motioning towards the vase on the nightstand.

“Oh my God, Steph. Those are beautiful,” she sang, crossing the room to get a better look. “They even smell expensive,” she sighed.

“Jade,” Taylor scolded with a chuckle.

“What? They do.”

“They do, don’t they?” I said, tucking my hair behind my ear.

“I’m so freakin’ jealous,” she huffed, flopping onto the bed a little too dramatic.

“You are not. You buy flowers like that all the time.”

“Yeah, but it’s not the same. I want a man to buy me flowers.”

“A man like Seth?” I threw at her.

“Maybe. We’ll see if tonight goes well.”

“What about you and Bradly?” Jade asked, turning the subject around to Taylor.

“I’m excited but I’m not getting my hopes up for anything past tonight,” she shrugged.

“Why?”

“I’m certain he only asked me out because he needed a date to the gala,” she said, picking at the old polish on her nails.

“See. I’m not the only one feeling uncertain,” Jade agrees.

“You guys really feel that way?” I asked, my eyes bouncing between them. “No, tonight was supposed to be fun for all of us. When was the last time we all had dates?”

Taylor and Jade exchanged a look, but came up empty.

“See. It’s been so long that neither of us can remember. Let’s just go get pampered for tonight and have a good time.”
