CHAPTER TWELVE

Mimosas Are Like Truth Serum

Stephanie

Waiting for the breakfast bar to open, I took this opportunity to kick back on a lounger and relax in the sun with a good book. Dropping onto the lounge chair next to me, Jade slides her sunglasses into place.

“So, what happened after we left last night?” Jade asked, her lips curling into a devilish smile. “Did you take him back to your room?” she teases, her brow arching.

Bookmarking my page, I rubbed my lips together with a smirk.

“You did, didn’t you?” she shrieked, pushing her shades up to get a better look. “Is that why you’re so tired this morning? Because you didn’t get much sleep?” She continued, sending me a teasing half-smile.

Shaking my head, I couldn’t control the smile that crossed my lips. “Seriously? It wasn’t like that.”

“But something totally happened,” Taylor chimed in. “It’s written all over your face,” she added, dropping onto the lounge chair on my left.

“Spill it,” Jade leaned in.

Suddenly unable to remove the grin from my face, I couldn’t help myself from searching back through our interactions from the night before. “I think we broke down some major walls.”

“As in..”

“As in, we talked about the past and decided to move forward.”

“That’s good. Right?” Taylor asked.

“Definitely. I even felt that spark reunite between us,” I confessed.

“I’m sensing a but in there,” Jade said.

“I’m afraid of making a mistake,” I whispered, angry with myself for allowing my thoughts to come up with ways to make things work between Logan and I, when I knew at my core I could never be with him. Not when his career comes first.

Taylor looks me in the eye. “Why? Because of Nick?”

“That’s part of it,” I nod.

“Forget about Nick,” Jade blurts.

“Nick left you, Steph. It’s okay to do what makesyouhappy.”

“You think so?”

“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Nick was your practice guy, not your forever man. Take what you learned from that relationship and use it to better your future. Don’t let the pain of the past ruin your enjoyment of the present.”

Although I hate to admit it, they’re right. Nick left me and it was time to give myself permission to live again. Inhaling a deep breath, I wondered if I could find that happiness with Logan.

Jade pushes her sunglasses into her hair as her eyes sweep over me. “Are you nervous?” she asks, sweeping her legs over the edge of her lounger.

Anytime Logan’s name is mentioned, there’s a flutter in my chest. “Am I nervous? What kind of question is that? Of course, I’m nervous. We’re talking about going on a date with Logan Petersen.”

“What about that scares you?” Taylor asked on my left. “The fact that he’s famous or that you’ve been in love with him since high school?”

I take a deep breath and lose focus as I stare out at the water. “Why can’t it be both?” I asked, twisting to face Jade.

“I get that.”

Pinching the front of my shirt, I pull it off my chest, then push it back rapidly, repeatedly, trying to cool myself. “Damm, it’s hot,” I whined, staring back out at the pool
