CHAPTER FOUR

The Phone Number

Stephanie

Planning for a trip is something I don’t do often, and I didn’t have a clue about what to pack, especially for a cruise. Doing my research online, I read that the sun was extra hot out on the decks, and the evenings were cooler. I read a long list of items I’d need on the ship, everything from personal fans, to flip-flops with grips, to waterproof phone cases, and Ziploc bags?

More confused than ever, I got Ashlynne to help me pack. She’s the adventurous one, always looking for an excuse for a getaway at a moment’s notice. I wish it was possible for her to go with me on this cruise, but her work schedule is insane.

“I can’t believe you’re going to be gone half the summer,” she whined, helping me pack.

“It’s not half the summer, it’s only two and a half weeks. You’re going to be busy most of the summer, anyway. Don’t you have a full schedule at Inkspirationz for July and early August?”

“Yeah. But it’s going to be weird not having you here,” she said, dropping onto my bed with a huff.

“Invite Mira and the gang over here.”

“Yeah. I guess I could,” she sighed, flopping back.

“Don’t act so dramatic,” I laughed. “You’re acting like the day I moved out.”

“Yes! That is exactly what this feels like,” she popped back up.

“I’m sure you’ll survive,” I called over my shoulder as I crossed the room to my desk.

Picking up my Kindle, I glanced at my quarter three calendar above my desk. Seeing Logan’s signing event highlighted in orange on the date of September twelfth, I wondered what it would be like to see him again after all these years.

“Earth to Stephanie. Where’d you go?” Ashlynne said, breaking into my thoughts.

“Nowhere,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m right here.”

“Worried about Logan’s signing?” She asked, resting her head on my shoulder.

“Maybe.”

“It’s been seven years since that game, Steph.”

“I know,” I sighed.

“Should we look him up?”

“No need. I already did.”

“And?”

“Nothing. His personal account is private and I don’t follow the team,” I explained, packing my Kindle along with the charging cord into the bag.

“What about Mia? You still talk to her, don’t you?”

“Yeah, but we don’t talk about Logan. I don’t want to make it awkward for her.”

“I get that. I’m going to grab some more coffee. Do you want any?” Ashlynne asked over her shoulder.

“I probably shouldn’t have anymore. We’re going to be leaving soon.”

“What time are Mom and Dad coming by to see you off?”

“Any minute, actually. Will you buzz them in?”
