“Oh my God, Stephanie. That’s amazing. Congratulations,” she said, flying around the desk to hug me. To be sponsored like that is an enormous achievement.”

“Thank you,” I said, smiling with pride. “The only problem is I’ll need to take the month of July off to attend,” I added, worrying that Logan’s book launch dates might conflict with the trip.

“Of course. We’ll work around your schedule. We always have,” Elora said, pacing the room. “Speaking of. Did you get my email with the next book launch we’re promoting?”

“You mean for Logan’s book?” I said, shaking my head. “This isn’t your clever way of trying to get us together, is it?” I sent her a smirk.

Elora, Logan, and I didn’t grow up together or go to the same school, but we were close with the last owner of Owls Books and Cafe, Betty. Before Betty passed, she left Owls to her long-lost granddaughter - Elora, and we all became great friends, often hanging out here. Logan and I helped Elora learn all the basics about the store, since we knew so much about it.

A smile stretches across her lips. “It wasn’t my intention. I swear,” she says, trying to defend herself. “But when his publicist called and asked if we’d host an event in September, how could I say no? It’s Logan, and he mentioned Owls in his book. It’s amazing publicity and keeps my grandmother’s dream alive.”

Nodding with understanding, I wet my lips. “Of course. I get it. I would have made the same move if I were you,” I admitted, taking a moment to think. “It was just a surprise, is all.” I plastered on a fake smile that I hope she didn’t see through.

“What’s going on?”

“I haven’t seen Logan in years,” I sighed, the familiar ache returning to my chest anytime I thought about him.

“Steph, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize how much this might affect you. I’m more than happy to cover the event if you need me to,” she offered, standing in the doorway, ready to exit.

“I’ll start the planning and put everything into the calendar, but can I have a night to think about it?” I asked, unsure about my feelings.

“Of course you can,” she breathed. “Let me know if there’s anything you need,” she said, tapping on the doorframe before she closes the door behind her.
