She tosses her head back laughing and it does something to me that’s never happened. It makes my heart race. I like knowing in this moment I’m the reason she’s happy.

“Fun size, huh?” she asks, smacking my arm. “Is that a crack at my size?”

“Fuck yeah it is. You’re small as hell. I could fit you in my damn pocket.”

She continues to smile as she pushes her long blonde hair out of her face. “I like it.”

I nod as my stomach growls. We haven’t eaten since breakfast and I’m starving. “You hungry?”

“I could eat,” she says.

“Do you want to eat somewhere, or would you rather just get it to go?” I ask, wanting to make sure she’s comfortable.

She bites her lip, looking at me from under her long lashes. “Would you mind if we just got something to go?”

“No, I was thinking the same thing. I want to get home anyway,” I lie.

I stop at a local chicken place and order us a bucket of chicken and fries. I don’t normally eat in my truck, but I’ll do whatever makes her comfortable.

We eat the chicken, listen to more music, and before I know it, we are only a half hour from my place.

“We’re almost there,” I tell her.

“It’s beautiful here,” she says, looking out the passenger window. “It’s really not what I was expecting.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“Definitely,” she whispers.

I drive past Ruthless Headquarters and notice that Rogue’s light is still on. I’m going to have to go talk to him tomorrow. I can’t continue to tell him I’m working on it. That’s just making shit worse.

We pull up to my loft and I park in the small parking lot on the side of it. I’m glad to be home, even if I’ll be sleeping on the couch. At least, it’s in my own place.

“This is where you live?” she asks, looking up at the building.

“Yeah.” I push open my door and lift my chin. “Come on.”

She follows me, looking over her shoulder every step of the way. I shouldn’t feel angry, but I do. Those assholes, especially Vinny, did this to her. They made her this nervous, untrusting woman. It makes me want to drive back there and kill him.

Once we are inside and, on the elevator, I visibly see her relax. I squeeze her shoulder and she lifts her green eyes up toward me. “You’re safe here, fun size.”

She laughs as the elevator doors open at my nickname for her, but quickly the smile drops. “Yeah, it’s just gonna take some getting used to.”

My loft is the penthouse, so it’s the only one on this floor. I like having the space even though it’s just me. Once the door is unlocked, I hold it open so she can go through. I let it close behind us and lock it. Usually I don’t, but I have a feeling it will help her.

“Holy shit, Cash. This place is amazing,” she whispers, spinning in a circle.

Pri

de, something I’ve never felt when someone visited, strikes me. It shouldn’t matter so much that she is impressed with my place, but for some damn reason it does.

This pull I feel to her is getting stronger. It’s not just physical, it’s definitely turning emotional. I’m not sure having her in my space for a long period of time is going to be a good idea. I might do something I’ll end up regretting. Or something I’ll crave more of.
