I laughed. “You got it. I tell you everything anyway. Like the fact that he’s so hot.”

“Really?” Katie giggled. “Better than the photos?”

“Oh my God. So much better. And he oozes sex appeal.”

“What’s his body like?” Katie asked, leaning on the bar. We had both finished our cocktails, and even though I wasn’t exactly tipsy, I felt light and airy. Maybe I was still running on the high of getting the job.

“He was sitting down most of the time, so I didn’t get a full workup, but he has broad shoulders, and he carries himself with confidence and authority.”

“I should hope so,” Katie said. “With that much money, it would be downright disappointing if he slouched.”

I laughed.

“So, would you do him?” Katie asked.

I nearly choked. “He’s my boss.”

“I mean hypothetically of course.”

“Honestly? Yeah. He’s so hot, Katie. But it’s not just that. There’s something dark and mysterious about him. You know, classic stuff. But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only woman in the world to think that way, and I’m sure that he has a wide selection of women to choose from.”

“You’re going to be right up there, brushing shoulders with him. Who says it can’t be you?”

“What happened to it being hypothetical?” I asked.

Katie shrugged. “If a man like Brett Loomis, with all his riches, throws himself at me, who am I to say no?”

I laughed. “Even if it cost you your career?”

“I’ve lost jobs over less.” Katie sniffed.

I shook my head. Katie was something else. Her outlook on life was so different from mine. I thought about Brett and how attractive he was. There had been definite tension in the office. It had taken my breath away, and the way he had looked at me had had me feeling weak at the knees.

No doubt he looked at all women that way. Brett looked like the type of man who believed he could get anything he wanted. And with billions of dollars to his name, why not?

“On a serious note, just be careful with your heart,” Katie said.

“Why?”

“It’s not in the news or anything because he plays his cards close to his chest. But there are rumors that he fucks around in the company.”

“What do you mean?”

Katie pulled a face that suggested I should have known what she meant.

“I’m not going to get romantically involved with him, if that’s what you’re saying.”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. Screw him for fun if he’s worth it. But don’t mix business and fun with romance, that’s all.”

I shook my head. “I’m not planning on getting involved with anyone in any capacity, fun or romance. I’m there to build my career back up to where it was before Daniel did a number on me. Brett is a means to an end, a paycheck.”

“Keep seeing it like that. I hear he can be pretty irresistible.”

That wasn’t a problem then. I could resist any man. At twenty-six, I had only had one serious boyfriend, and it hadn’t worked out well. My mom had hated him, and she had managed to drive him away eventually. She was a bitch, but if he couldn’t handle her, he hadn’t been right for me anyway.

Seeing that I didn’t date and was at Loomis Industries solely for my career, I was sure I wasn’t going to get in trouble.

Katie and I had another couple of drinks together, and at midnight we finally headed home. I knew I shouldn’t have had so much to drink the night before my new job started, but now that I was home I could admit it to myself.

I was nervous.

After eating something and drinking enough water to be sure I wasn’t going to feel the effects of the alcohol in the morning, I climbed into bed. I set my alarms so that I would be on time, and I switched off the light.

In the dark, I flashed on Brett’s face again. He was a handsome devil, I had to admit. Katie’s words echoed in my mind. If he fucked around in the company, maybe he was colder and more heartless than he had come across in the interview. When I had spoken to him, he had seemed so open and welcoming. Charming. But maybe that was his tactic. Or maybe the rumors weren’t true. Rumors had a habit of being inconvenient in the worst possible way.
