“But in a perfect world, what would you have wanted?”

I shook my head. “This is one of those questions that make no sense. It’s not a perfect world so there’s no point thinking about it.” Even though I had thought about it. A lot. I would have liked to see Brett again outside of the office. To go on a real date with him. But that didn’t matter because it wasn’t going to happen.

Two men walked into the bar. When I looked up, I couldn’t believe it.

“Speak of the devil,” I said.

“Really? He’s here?” Katie craned her neck. She had an idea of what he looked like and spotted him almost immediately. “Holy shit. He’s here.”

I looked down. I didn’t want Brett to see me. I hadn’t expected him here, and I wasn’t ready with my poker face.

“He’s coming over,” Katie said. “What’s wrong with you?”

Thankfully, I didn’t have a chance to answer. Brett and Shane arrived at our seats, and Brett smiled at me.

“Fancy meeting you here,” he said.

I shrugged. “A girl gets thirsty, you know?”

Shane laughed. I remembered my manners and introduced Brett and Shane to Katie. When she took Shane’s hand, I could almost see the lust in Shane’s eyes.

“So, this is the famous Katherine Donovan,” Brett said.

“Call me Katie,” she said, gushing. I had noticed more people reacted this way around Brett. Was I the only one who hadn’t fallen over my feet when I’d met him?

“Katie. I’m glad to meet you in person. I have to thank you for pointing Erica in my direction.”

I blushed. After what I had just told Katie about sleeping with Brett, his sentence was more loaded than he had meant for it to be.

Katie laughed. “The pleasure is mine. And I thought she was perfect for the job.”

“You were right. She is perfect.”

Brett turned his dark eyes to me, and I shivered. Of course, he was talking about my position in the company and nothing else. I wasn’t going to read anything into his words.

“It’s great to meet one of my employees,” Brett said. “I don’t often get to do that.”

Katie grinned, and they talked about the publishing house for a short while, chatting about where she fit into the food chain that was Loomis Industries.

“You both look beautiful tonight, by the way,” Brett said, but he was smiling at me.

“God, are you going to butter each other up all night? I need a drink,” Shane said with disgust on his face.

“I need a refill too,” Katie said. “I’ll accompany you.”

Shane looked more than pleased, and Katie stood and left with him. With the two of them gone, I glanced at Brett. He wore a black and white checkered collared shirt and Levi’s that were faded in all the right places. He wore expensive-looking loafers with it and a heavy-looking watch on his arm, which had to be some amazing metal that cost a fortune.

“I hope your friend won’t mind Shane’s advances,” Brett said when they were gone. “He’s in a mood tonight.”

“I saw that. But Katie can hold her own, and she might just give him a run for his money.”

Brett laughed. “I’m glad to see you here tonight. Do you come here often?”

“First time,” I said.

“And what do you think?”

I looked around. “It’s a nice place for sure. But I don’t think it’s quite my thing. How about you? Do you come here often?”

Brett hesitated a moment. “I used to. It was a regular spot for us.”

“And now?”

He shrugged. “I guess it’s not quite my thing anymore either. My priorities have changed.”

“How?”

He hesitated again. I wondered what was going on in his head. He looked like he had a lot on his mind tonight. This was only the second time we were together outside of work if I discounted the sex we’d had, but Brett was a lot more distracted than he had been before. But then, we had been alone before, and it had been a quiet restaurant. The bar was noisy, and he hadn’t come alone.

“The view is fantastic,” I said, looking at the view that the rooftop bar offered.
