The Innocent

“Can someone fucking clue me in?” Oak asked.

Ace sighed, dropping his hand to the table with his eyes pinned on Jekyll. “Few years back, East’s president Gunner’s ex, who was also his son Con’s mom, was murdered. Pretty much tortured. It was tied to the Underground.”

“And the detective?”

“She was his woman.”

“Oh shit, I think I remember that,” Oak said.

Jekyll did. Killcreek played no role in it, but it certainly outlined the true danger of getting involved in their world.

“As far as I know, it was handled in house by East. But” —Ace blew out a heavy breath— “Your woman dies under the hand of the Underground with no legal repercussions, the detective is still gonna hold a grudge.” Ace glanced up at Cypher. “Any proof she’s in contact with him?”

“Yeah, phone calls. Not many and they’re all initiated by her. But it could be a problem especially with her connection to Jekyll and Hyde.”

“Well, fuck yeah there is. Something ain’t right here.” Hyde tapped his knuckles on the table. “She shows up, just happens to run in to Jekyll? Now we find out she’s connected to the police in Lawry?”

Gent chuckled. “And let’s not forget her call to Jekyll.”

Hyde shifted in his seat, knocking into his arm. “You talked to her?”

Jekyll grabbed the arms of the chair and stood. “She called the main house.”

“What the fuck, Jek?”

The cousins didn’t have any secrets. Not usually.

He ignored Hyde, turning to Cypher. “And maybe all this shit is coincidence.”

“And maybe it’s fucking not!” Hyde shouted but abruptly stopped when Ace lifted his hand.

“Hyde, man. I was there when we were coming out from Inez’s, and she showed up,” Cue said. “She looked just as surprised as Jek.”

It was true.

“Or she’s a really good fucking actress. I don’t like this.” Hyde hardened his gaze.

“I thought you liked her, brother.” Gent smirked.

“From a fucking distance. Why the hell is she in Lawry? In our state?” He pointed to Jekyll. “Reaching out to him.”

He could blame paranoia on Hyde’s end, but he’d be ignoring the obvious. The timing was suspicious. The encounter was too. Then calling him at the clubhouse without any real purpose? By nature, Jekyll didn’t trust anyone who hadn’t earned it. But he was usually able to see past bullshit and read people. However, even he could admit to himself that he didn’t think straight with her in mind. Maybe what he was seeing with her was all a ruse.

“I could always pay her a visit.” Gent lifted his hand.

Jekyll balled his fists as his muscles tightened.

“Not if you wanna fucking live,” Jekyll threatened.

Gent snickered and clucked his tongue. “Giving me mixed signals. First you say you’re not interested, but every time I mention her, you get territorial. Why is that?”

“Hey Gent.” Hyde pressed his palms to the table, leaning toward the brother. “Shut the fuck up.”

“How about everybody shuts the fuck up? We gotta get on the road,” Wraith said, breaking up some of the tension in the room. And for that, Jekyll was thankful. He immediately walked out when Ace ended the meeting. He didn’t even bother stopping at the bar. He headed out the back door and across the yard to his house. He was halfway to his place when he heard the pounding boots coming up from behind.

“Not fucking now, Hyde.”

He didn’t need to see his cousin to know it was him. They’d been joined since almost birth. No one knew him better than Hyde.
