“Why didn’t you tell me she’s in Lawry?”
The fucking balls on you, cousin. Jekyll didn’t care that he spent the majority of his time at Penny’s. But he wasn’t about to be interrogated over something that was probably nothing. And more so, something that had nothing to do with Hyde. Imogene is mine.
“Can’t tell you if you ain’t here. Maybe you spend less time with Penny and more with the club, you’d know shit.” It was a dig and meant to shut him down. It did the opposite.
Hyde pushed past him, blocking his path. His jaw squared, and his scowl deepened.
“That’s bullshit. I don’t like this thing with her, Jek.”
Jekyll ground his teeth, narrowing his gaze. He shot out his arm, pointing to the clubhouse. “Yeah, I heard you both fucking times you said it back there. What the fuck do you want me to do?”
“Be fucking honest.”
Jekyll knitted his brows. “About what?”
“Imogene.”
What the fuck was he talking about?
“I know you, Jek. And you and her…”
He stepped up, practically butting chests with his cousin. “There is no me and her.”
Hyde squared his jaw. “You want to keep that up for the club? Fucking fine by me, Jek. But I was fucking there. You weren’t just an inmate who stopped in the library and took some of her classes. Not to her.” Hyde paused briefly and inched closer, lowering his voice. “And she was never just the librarian. Not to you.”
Jekyll never once spoke about Imogene to anyone, including Hyde. But his cousin knew him better than anyone. He’d read through the silence and watched him watch her. But he wasn’t going to admit to anything.
“Did I go after her when I got out? Fucking no!”
That should’ve ended it, and for anyone else, it might have. Not his cousin. Hyde slowly nodded but didn’t say a word. The silence only intensified Jekyll’s anger, and he turned, stormed away, and headed to his house. He was about to climb the porch stairs.
“So she’s nothing to you, right? You don’t give a shit about her. Then why threaten the whole fucking prison?”
Jekyll stilled, and he slowly angled his head, glaring at Hyde.
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, you do. You made a deal with Morty in block two. Ran into him the morning we got out. He told me all about it. You watch over his mom, help her out if she needs something? And in return, he’d make sure Imogene stayed safe. And that was after you issued a threat to the whole goddamn prison. Your warning had been heard loud and clear. ‘You come for mine, I’m gonna come for yours?’ That’s a pretty bold statement for someone who means nothing to you.”
There was no disputing it. Not that it mattered. Jekyll didn’t have to answer to anyone. Not even Hyde.
“Why the fuck do you care?”
The corner of Hyde’s mouth hiked. “I don’t. But I do give a shit what happens to you. And her being here, this close, and running into you, calling you? Too many coincidences. Now her connection to the law? I don’t trust her, Jek.”
Jekyll snorted. “You afraid of a librarian?”
Hyde sighed. “I am when it comes to you.”
He scoffed. “She’s none of your fucking business.”
“Is she yours?”
Jekyll didn’t answer. Hyde could read through any lie. All he needed was to look him in the eyes. Jekyll turned, and walked inside, slamming the door behind him.
Fuck!
