“Get that looked at.”
“I will.”
Sarah slips her hand into his.
I look at it.
Well, at least I don’t have to see him at the office anymore.
CHAPTER 53
EMMA
Ifinally go to urgent care.
Not because Owen told me to.
I would like that noted.
The waiting room is bright, crowded, and under enough fluorescent lighting to discourage almost everything except illness.
I want antibiotics, clean bandages, and something strong enough to knock me the fuck out.
In less than twenty-four hours, I’ve nearly lost two fingernails, lost my job, and lost two friends.
This does not include my phone or my luggage.
I have suffered enough increasingly bad days for one week.
The replacement phone I bought during my connection has spent the last several hours rebuilding my life from the cloud. Messages arrive out of order. Voicemails appear from people who have spent the last several hours assuming I’m ignoring them.
For once, they’re wrong.
A nurse calls my name.
Twenty minutes later, my left hand is bandaged properly, two fingernails are wrapped separately, and I have prescriptions I intend to fill because apparently surviving torture only to develop an infection would be embarrassing.
I sit in the pharmacy waiting area and start deleting notifications.
Celeste.
Margot.
Owen.
I leave all three unread.
The next message is from a number I don’t recognize.
No greeting.
No explanation.
Wrong car.
Another appears beneath it.
Wrong glass.
