Owen comes out of his office.
He sees me and stops.
His eyes go immediately to my hand.
“What happened?”
“Nothing I want to talk about right now.”
He comes closer.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m good.”
He looks at me.
I let him.
Sarah holds up her hand again.
“I showed her.”
Owen glances at the ring.
Then at me.
There is a second where I can see him trying to decide whether something needs to be said.
It doesn’t.
“Congratulations,” I tell him.
“Thanks.”
“I should get going.”
Owen frowns.
“You just got here.”
“I know.”
“You needed something?”
The question catches me off guard.
I had.
Ten minutes ago, I had known exactly why I was coming here.
Now I cannot remember anything I want badly enough to ask him for.
“No. I’m good.”
For a second, I think he might say something about what he just let me walk into.
Instead he looks at my hand.
