What if Star had lured him here, and she was going to find a dead Bolt?

Tears filled her eyes, she felt sick, and the fear raced down her spine. This couldn’t be happening. She gripped the floor, pushed herself up off the bed, and got to her feet, closing her eyes, not daring to see if Bolt was alive or dead. Only, she’d never been a coward. She was not going to start now, she needed to know what she was dealing with here. Her hands shook.

She opened her eyes, and Bolt was passed out on the bed, with no signs of injury. She moved closer to him and crawled on the bed to check for a pulse. He was alive. They hadn’t killed him.

“Bolt, wake up.” She slapped her hand right across his face, and in response he let out a grunt. She growled and slapped him again, then again.

It was not lost on her that this is probably what she should have done over ten years ago, when he told her the condom broke. He hadn’t even been wearing a condom. She shouldn’t have married him.

What he did wasn’t romantic. It was selfish.

Regardless of her feelings for him now, she was not going to let him die.

Chapter Seventeen

Venom had committed acts of brutality in his life. He’d cut men’s penises right off and fed it to them. He’d hurt them and made them beg for death. Nothing in all his years of killing had ever prepared him for what he’d just seen. It was sickening.

Gus arrived at the clubhouse, and Venom sat there and listened as Maverick retold everything they had seen. They still hadn’t heard from Romano.

He was never going to forget the sight of David and his family. It was cruel in unspeakable measures. All he could think about was Morwenna. They had to get her out and to safety. The club was not safe.

“How did you get out?” Venom asked.

Gus looked toward him. “I killed the three people that came for my wife. I was not where I was supposed to be, because I never stick to the same pattern. I believe that is how the Karamazov are able to do what they do. They watch people. They blend in. The men I killed were not special forces, or trained assassins. They were men that clearly worked for themselves and did not have any code.”

“They go via patterns,” Venom said. He turned to look at Maverick. “That’s what we do. We move.”

“You’re talking a club of over thirty men, not to mention inside,” Maverick said. “It’s impossible.”

“If we stay, we die, but if we disband and figure out a way to communicate, maybe we can take them out. Beat them at their own game.”

Gus shook his head. “It’s suicide.”

“So is staying here. They’re coming and you’re the only survivor. We can’t risk it. There’re people’s lives at stake.”

The only person he cared about was Morwenna. She had to live. He had to get her to safety.

“Separating everyone would risk total annihilation,” Maverick said. “They’d be able to pick us off one by one.”

“Only if we lost communication. Think about it, we have no way of knowing how many we’re up against. If we part, there’s a chance we could fight them all off.”

He looked between Gus and Maverick. “I’m not saying we run away, but we come up with a better plan than we already have, and we make it work.”

No one said a word as Gus and Maverick looked at each other. Venom didn’t want to argue about this, because as far as he could see, this was the only logical explanation for all of them. Just as he was about to plead his case, his cell phone rang. For the first couple of rings, he just ignored it. Whoever was calling wasn’t important.

The phone didn’t stop ringing. He pulled it out of his jacket pocket, intent on turning it off completely and ignoring the caller, only to find Morwenna’s name on the screen, as well as her smiling face. In that brief moment, he remembered her taking that picture and showing him how to use it as her calling card, or avatar, he believed she called it. Either way, it was a picture that appeared whenever she was calling him. He hovered over her name, then quickly accepted it. Now was not the time to question why she was calling him.

“Morwenna?”

“Shut up, I’ve been taken by the Karamazov. I’m in Star’s apartment and I’ve got Bolt with me. At the moment he is passed out, and I can’t get him to wake up.”

“The Karamazov is with you?” Venom asked.

This got Gus and Maverick’s attention and he quickly put it on speaker.

“Yes, I don’t know what is going on, but they have literally stabbed Star in two.” Morwenna let out a sob. “I’ve heard the horror stories, and I don’t know what is happening. You need to come because I don’t think they’re going to be long.”

“Honey, remember everything I taught you.”
