Warm heat bathed her back as Trey stepped up behind her. “I cleared her.”

“Uh huh. So, you two are working together now.”

Amy rubbed at the pounding behind her temple. She looked at Trey. He gave nothing away.

“You know I’ve been researching old cases.”

He crossed his arms over his chest and nodded.

“I’ve found a connection that proves my father’s death wasn’t an accident.”

Ryan motioned for her to continue.

“Let’s take this inside.” Trey gestured to the couch and closed the door behind Ryan.

Amy took one of the side chairs and watched the guys put as much space between them as possible as they sat on the couch.

She did an internal head shake. Men.

She blew out a breath to steady herself. Waited until the two were both listening to speak.

“I met with Gus West’s daughter. She mentioned a scholarship her father applied for that she and her sister received. I tracked the company. It’s a ghost. No website, no reason they received it. Nothing.”

“Who would pay to have your father killed?”

Trey and Amy shared a look. He nodded.

“The Gardiners. They framed my brother for dealing drugs and my father never quit looking into it.”

The moment the lightbulb went off in Ryan’s head, she saw it. “Amy, now you took up the search. The vandalism, the break in.”

“Don’t forget the note.” Amy added.

Ryan’s brows flattened. “What note?”

Amy told him about the note left on her car. A lame attempt to scare her off the case.

“She rattled someone’s cage.”

Trey rose and moved to stand behind her. He lay a hand on her shoulder, offering support. She’d take it.

Ryan blew out a breath and ran both hands through his hair. “Okay. We need to document everything.”

His gaze cut to Trey. “You think we have a dirty cop?”

“Could be you for all I know.”

Ryan rolled his eyes. “Get real. Okay, we don’t add the info to the files until we need to. Anyone can access an open file in the station. But I want copies. All of us should have them in case something happens.”

Ryan pulled out his phone and started typing. “Sorry to cut your night short, guys, but let's get started. Amy, get that video. I want to see it.”

Trey and she shared a look. So much for flambé.

The next night, APD lost to the hardware store in a five to zero shutout. Amy and Trey were back in his apartment by nine-thirty waiting for their takeout. No chance of them finishing what they started yesterday before Daniels showed up.

The buzzer sounded. She jumped.

“Hello.”
