“It’s me. Let me up.”
A minute later, Ryan sauntered in. “Sorry, I’m late.”
Amy paced the living room. “You sure Adam’s working?”
Trey opened his phone and showed her the text from Brie. “Yes. Now you can relax before you wear a hole in my carpet.”
She huffed but plopped to the couch.
Ryan pulled his body cam from his backpack and strapped it on. “My connection assured me that the order you placed would have a little kick in it.”
She hoped so. This waiting grated on her nerves.
Trey dropped into the seat next to her and placed his hand on her knee. Her foot stopped. She hadn’t even realized it was bouncing. Dang nerves. She’d stared down hardened criminals, been punched, and maced, so why was she so freaked over this?
Her father’s face flashed in her mind. Yeah, this case had way more riding on it than just a drug bust.
Finally, the bell rang. She jumped. Trey followed her and buzzed them up.
Relax, Amy, and open the door. She shook out her arms before turning the knob.
A tall guy posed on the other side. She could see where he could have been a jock in school. He slid the food containers from the insulated bag and held them out to her.
“Let me grab your tip. Come on in.”
He followed her.
Trey slammed the door from behind, startling the kid. “Hey Adam, it’s been a while.”
Ryan snatched the Styrofoam boxes. “I’ll take those.”
“Uh, but—”
“Relax dude, it’s good.” Ryan flashed his badge.
“I didn’t do nothin’.”
“Really, then why is sweat pouring from you like a sprinkler?” Amy scanned his face. He went from calm to freaked in under ten seconds. “Relax, we’re just going to check that we got the right order then you’re free to go.”
“Or not.” Trey leaned against the door with his arms folded over his chest.
Ryan opened the box and sniffed. “Yum. I love caprese chicken with a side of extra spicy stuffed mushrooms.”
He took a dish from the cupboard and dumped the meal on the plate. With a fork, he gently lifted the liner from the tray. There sat a plastic bag with what looked to be crystal meth. “Well, look at that. I guess that’s the extra spicy part.”
Amy grabbed Adam’s arms, locked them behind him, immobilizing them. She nudged him into a chair. “I think you should have a seat.”
Trey sat across from him. “Adam, you're a smart kid. You have a couple choices, talk to us here or we can take this downtown.”
“I didn’t know that was in there. I swear.”
“It would be in your best interest to work with us then.” Trey tapped his finger on the table as he waited for Adam’s reply. With each tap, the kid got jumpier.
His gaze darted from one to the other. “What do you want?”
“Just tell us who put the drugs in the box?”
He shook his head. Blond hair flopped into his eyes. “I don’t know. I just deliver.”
