“What’s going on?” She smoothed a hand over her hair.
“I don’t know. He asked if you were here.”
One sharp knock later, Ryan Daniels was in the apartment. He took in Trey and Amy’s appearance.
“Sorry to break up your evening.”
“What’s going on?” Amy stepped up.
His hand held up his phone. Her message on the screen. “What the fuck, Larson? You interviewed the impound lot guard? You didn’t even tell me you found the car, just sent me a text after.”
Crap, she should have read him in. How to explain. “Ryan, I wanted to make sure it was the same car that killed Gus.”
“Was it?”
“I don’t know. The car is gone. We have a copy of the surveillance video.” She moved to the door, but Trey stopped her with a hand.
“Wait. I think we need to discuss this before you give him the flashdrive.”
Ryan spun and glared at Trey.
Well shit. This was going down the dumper fast. Amy stepped between the men. “Ryan—”
“I’m BCA.” Trey blurted out at the same time.
“You think I didn’t know that?” Ryan ran a hand through his hair.
“When?” Amy asked.
“That day he came to the station. Swenson let him wait for you at your desk. That’s not protocol. I looked you up after that.”
She should have figured Ryan would put it together.
“You two can drop this whole fake dating thing now.” He looked from his bare chest to her open shorts button. “Maybe it’s not fake.”
She quickly fastened her jeans. “Listen, don’t say anything.”
“No, it’s alright. I need to start interviews this week. I couldn’t keep it quiet much longer.” Trey grabbed a sweatshirt off the hook by the door and slipped it on.
“So, you are investigating Ashwood. Why?”
Trey cleared his throat. Amy looked at the floor.
“What?”
Amy met his gaze. “He’s looking into the possibility of corruption in Ashwood PD.”
Silence boomed in the room, louder than any gunshot.
“I’m on the list.” It wasn’t a question.
“We all are.” Amy laid a hand on his arm.
“No. Only the people in the station the night Finden died.” Trey added.
“That’s Amy, too.” Ryan’s eyes squinted. “I would have sworn this thing between you two was fake, but tonight…”
“It’s complicated.” Amy shoved her hands in her pockets. Complicated was an understatement.
