She nodded.

He tucked her hair behind her ear. “You’re worried about getting hurt.”

“Aren’t you?”

He thought about it before answering, and the truth surprised him. “I’m less afraid of getting hurt than I am of losing you.”

“Don’t they go hand in hand?”

“Yes, but it’s not the heartbreak that scares me. It’s believing I didn’t want or need a life partner, that I was fulfilled by all the places I’ve gone and the things I’ve done, and then finding you and falling head over heels and realizing that everything else pales in comparison to how it feels to be with you.”

“Flynn,” she whispered, her eyes tearing up.

“I hope that doesn’t scare you off.”

“How could it, when I feel the same way?”

Their mouths came together in a slow, sensual kiss, and he moved over her. She smiled up at him, whispering, “I thought we weren’t doing this.”

“I guess your parents will just have to be okay knowing I’m your boy toy.”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

FLYNN PULLED ON his shirt Saturday morning and leaned against the doorframe to the bathroom that adjoined Sutton’s childhood bedroom, watching her put on lotion. Her hair was wet, and she had a towel wrapped around her. They’d just made love in the shower, and still he wanted to strip that towel off and love her until they were both too tired to move.

She glanced at him. “Get that look off your face, Braden.”

“What look is that?” He closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around her from behind, gazing at her in the mirror. “The look that says I can’t get enough of you?” He kissed her shoulder.

She turned, wrapping her arms around his neck. “As much as I love that look, this house is about to become mayhem central, and getting caught with our pants down won’t work to your advantage.” She went up on her toes and kissed him.

“Duly noted. What’s today’s plan?”

“I thought we’d head into town after breakfast to find you some clothes for the wedding, and I was hoping to show you around the island since the wedding isn’t until four.”

“So we have all day together?”

“Most of it. I need to meet Indi and the girls here at two to get ready. You can help the guys set up for the wedding, or borrow my father’s car and go somewhere, or just chill here at the house if you want.”

“It all sounds good to me.” He slipped his hands beneath her towel and squeezed her butt.

She wiggled out of his grasp. “Go get some breakfast before you get yourself in trouble. I’ll be down after I get dressed and dry my hair.”

“Breakfast sounds good.” He raked his gaze down her body. “Lose the towel, baby. I’m starved.”

She giggled and shooed him out the door.

He tugged her in for one last kiss, then gave her ass a swat, earning a pink-cheeked glare. “See you downstairs, Steele.”

He followed the scent of bacon and coffee to the kitchen. Shelley and Steve stood by the stove with their arms around each other and their hands on each other’s butts, talking between kisses. “Uh, sorry.” Flynn turned to go back upstairs.

“Flynn, honey, come back,” Shelley said, pretty in jeans and a forest-green T-shirt.

He headed back into the kitchen. “You sure? I didn’t mean to interrupt a private moment.”

“Son, we raised six kids,” Steve said as he cracked eggs into a pan on the stove beside another pan of sizzling bacon. A maroon Top of the Island Vineyard polo shirt was stretched across his thick chest. He was a good-looking man with short dark hair flecked with gray, a neatly trimmed beard, and a friendly demeanor. “We gave up private moments a long time ago.”

“Would you like some coffee or juice?” Shelley poured batter into a waffle maker, nodding toward the coffeemaker.
