“Come on, Tay,” Megan said. “You can’t just sit on this information. You’ve already known way too long without telling him.”
“What if it changes things between us?”
“Isn’t that a risk you have to take?”
“Is it though?” I asked. “I mean… how else would he find out? It’s not like Brady’s in either one of our lives anymore. I mean, how could it come out?”
“How did you figure it out?” Megan asked.
“Well, he mentioned Brady’s full name and—”
“Exactly,” Megan pointed out. “A slip of the tongue… that’s all it will take.”
I sighed and buried my face in my hands. “This sucks.”
“Sorry, kid,” Megan said.
“I think I should at least wait till this whole stalker thing is settled though,” I said, picking at my salad without really tasting it. “Reed has enough on his plate to worry about.”
“You’re procrastinating.”
“And I don’t deny it,” I admitted. “But I also don’t want him to have to worry about anything else.”
“Where’s your young charge?” Megan asked. “Usually you’re with her during the day.”
“She’s at school, Megan,” I said. “Kids still have to go to school during the day.”
“Oh, right…”
“I have to pick her up in a few hours and since I had some time to kill, I thought about having lunch with you.”
“You chose to have lunch with me and not your secret boyfriend; I’m flattered.”
I smiled. “His building is actually only a few blocks down from here.”
“You planning on stopping by?”
“I hadn’t,” I admitted. “But that doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”
By the time Megan and I had finished up our lunch, I still had about an hour to kill, and the idea of dropping by Reed’s office seemed like a good one. So I said goodbye to Megan and headed in that direction. Reed’s office was on the third floor of the building. I took the elevator up, but I didn’t bump into anyone along the way.
I made my way towards Reed’s office when a young man with a pointed nose and a wide smile stopped me.
“Excuse me, may I help you?”
“Uh… I’m here to see Reed… ah, I mean Mr. Davis.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
“Um, no.”
“If you want to meet with Mr. Davis, I’m afraid an appointment is necessary, ma’am.”
“Actually, I’m not a client or anything. I’m his… nanny.”
I was on the verge of saying girlfriend when I changed my mind. The man raised his eyebrows. “Oh, okay; I’ll let him know you’re here.”
He went into Reed’s office, and a moment later the door opened, and he ushered me through. “Come in, ma’am.”
