I walked in, and then he gave me a parting smile and bowed out of the room. Reed’s office was huge and sparsely furnished, but it did have an overload of shelving space that was taken up by hundreds upon hundreds of books. Reed was sitting at a massive oak desk, and he stood up when he saw me.

“This is a surprise,” he said.

“Hi,” I said, walking towards him and giving him a small peck on the lips. “I hope you don’t mind that I stopped by.”

“Not at all,” Reed said. “I’m glad you did.”

“I still have some time before I need to pick Jenna up from school.”

“I know.”

I smiled. “Is everything all right?” I blurted out before I could stop myself.

Reed frowned. “Of course; why do you ask?”

I took both his hands in mine and sighed. “I don’t know, maybe it’s my imagination or something, but… I have this feeling that something’s been bothering you lately. Like maybe you’ve been keeping something from me. Am I crazy?”

Reed looked at me carefully for a moment, and then he sighed. “You’re not completely crazy.”

I felt a lump of fear form in my throat, and I immediately jumped to worst case scenario. “Does it have something to do with me? I mean… us?”

“What?” Reed asked, and he sounded surprised. “Of course not. It’s about this whole stalking business.”

“Oh,” I said, and I had to admit I was immediately relieved.

Reed took my hand and walked me over to a chair. “The detective I hired is trying to find some leads that will help us find the person who's been sending the letters, but… they’ve taken pains to cover their tracks.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Reed sighed. “The reason I’ve been a little distant lately is because I’ve been trying to keep this from you.”

He walked around to his desk and took out a bunch of letters; I counted four. “More letters came for you at the apartment.”

“Oh my God; did you read them?”

“Yes,” Reed admitted. “They all contain more of the same. I wouldn’t read them if I were you. They’ve all been sent through different courier services. Frank tracked down each letter, but apparently, it seems they’ve been sent by different people who were just following instructions.”

“You should have told me,” I said.

“I know.” Reed nodded. “But I didn’t want you—”

“To worry,” I finished for him. “I know that too.”

“She’s being smart this time,” Reed said. “But I’m still going to catch her. I promise.”

I nodded.

“And I’m sorry; I promise never to keep secrets from you again.”

I smiled, feeling slightly guilty about the secret I was keeping. But I justified that by telling myself that the same thing I’d been repeating for the last several weeks. He had enough on his plate to deal with.

“I should get going,” I said. “I need to pick up Jenna.”

“You still have time,” Reed pointed out, looking at the clock on his desk.

“I always get there early,” I said.

“You’ll still get there early if you leave in twenty minutes,” Reed said, and he pulled me towards him. “And twenty minutes is plenty of time.”
