Chapter Twenty-Two

Taylor

“I’m glad you called,” Megan said, as she took a sip of her drink. “It feels like I haven’t seen you in ages. And anyway, I’m always ready for lunch in the city.”

“Good, because I was in need of someone to talk to,” I said. “How’ve you been?”

“Forget about me,” Megan said, waving away my question. “My life isn’t nearly as interesting as yours is.”

I laughed. “I don’t know about that.”

“Please; you’re the one with a hot boss and a stalker and a penthouse apartment at the moment.”

“It’s not my apartment,” I reminded Megan. “And I’m just staying there temporarily.”

Megan shot me a pointed glance. “How long has it been since you moved in?”

“Umm, like five days.”

“Nine,” Megan replied. “I’ve been keeping track.”

I sighed. “I’ll be moving back to our apartment soon,” I promised. “This is just until everything blows over. Reed’s hired a private detective, and I’m sure he’s got a couple of leads.”

“You’re sure?” Megan asked. “Why don’t you know?”

“Because Reed has been extremely quiet on that front lately,” I admitted. “In fact, he’s been distant in general.”

“Hmm… did you have a fight or something?” Megan asked.

“No,” I said. “In fact, we’ve been getting along great. Just a few days ago he told me how he considered me part of his little world with Jenna.”

“And I bet he looked good when he said it.”

“Focus, Megan.”

“Right.” She smiled sheepishly.

“I think he’s just been worried about this whole stalker business,” I said. “And he’s been getting a little paranoid about stuff like security, but what if it’s something else?”

“Like what?”

“Like… maybe he found out about how he and I are… you know.”

“Related?”

“Eww, we arenotrelated,” I said emphatically. “I was going to say connected.”

“Is there a difference?”

“There’s a huge difference, Megan.”

“All right, okay,” Megan said, holding up her hands. “Don’t bite my head off; I’m just having a little fun at your expense.”

“I know, and will you please stop?” I said. “This is actually my life.”

“You need to tell him about that,” Megan said seriously.

“No,” I sighed.
