Page 71 of Stalking Margery

“I promise you he’s not a cop. You want to know why?”

She looked at Daddy, waiting for him to explain how he wasn’t a cop. She wished she had taken a video whenever he came over to show that he was a cop. Maybe then they would believe her.

“He’s not a cop because he works for me. I couldn’t have the authorities conducting an investigation, so I had our techguy, Rolo, make sure that any time you called nine-one-one, it went to Matthias’s phone number instead.”

Her mouth hung open as his words sunk in. There was no way what he was saying was true. She remembered what she had seen and heard. It was real, very real.

“You remember me telling you about not involving innocent people so they didn’t get hurt?” Daddy asked. “I couldn’t allow that would happen. So anytime you called nine-one-one, it went to Matthias’ phone, and he would handle it.”

How many times had she been lied to? How many things were still a lie? Was everything built on something false? Was Ethan lying to her right now, and he wasn’t actually the Ethan she knew years ago? Could he have taken the skin from his body right after he died and transplanted it onto his body?

She let go of Daddy’s hand and ran the palms of her hand down her face. Everything was getting to be too much.

“Wait.” Her eyes went wide. She quickly turned toward Matthias and stared at him. “You were the one that saved me from almost getting raped.”

He nodded. Margery knew there was something familiar about that guy who had rescued her. She couldn’t put it together back then, but it was all making sense now.

“Your phone rang when you told me to call nine-one-one.”

He nodded once again.

“That time, he let it go through, so you actually reached the police.” Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Why were you there to begin with?” she asked.

That part didn’t make sense. She hadn’t called nine-one-one before he arrived. How did he know she was going to be in danger?

“He got there just in time,” Daddy answered for him. “He was on his way to drop something off for me.”

Her mouth fell open. Oh, my goodness.

“The stuffed zebra,” she whispered.

“Bingo.” Matthias’s deep voice filled the room.

“You were the one to place it. I thought it was one of the police officers. I freaked out.”

“Such a pretty sight,” Daddy murmured against her cheek.

“Wait. So you’re telling me Matthias actually dressed up as a police officer and took her call whenever she dialed nine-one-one?” Clinton asked.

“This is amazing. I never thought I would actually see the day he was someone else but himself,” Dahmere laughed.

“Dude, shut up,” Clinton argued.

“Make me.”

“Is that a dare?”

Margery wasn’t paying attention to them. Her mind was on the fact that Matthias had impersonated a police officer. She guessed she should be thankful since Ethan was thinking of innocent people. If they had gotten involved and looked into things, would he have killed them?

“Clinton. Dahmere. Shut the fuck up,” Daddy growled.

They quieted and turned their attention to them.

“I just can’t believe it. I would have loved to see him dressed up like that. Marg, did you happen to get a picture of him?” Clinton asked. “I would love to have a picture of that. Maybe frame it and put it up somewhere, or we could printover a hundred of them and place them all around our houses.”

Her jaw hit the floor. Did he have a death sentence? Clinton was pretty scary, but Matthias was terrifying. The way he glared at her or anyone in the kitchen.
