“I figured most Littles liked chicken nuggets. I saw that you didn’t have any in your freezer, so I bought some.”

“Are you trying to buy her affection?” Clinton asked.

“Maybe. And so what? I was also thinking about her and her possibly wanting something that could make her, I don’t know, feel better?” Dahmere explained.

Did they all know Daddy had stalked her and kidnapped her? Was it common knowledge?

“What do you say, Little one?” Daddy squeezed her hand.

“Thank you,” she quietly said.

“How about you go sit down and talk to them while I make lunch?”

Unease filled Margery. While she was getting a little more comfortable with them, she wasn’t exactly ready to sit by them. Her mind kept going back to them harming her. Ifshe sat next to them, they could kill her before Daddy even knew.

“You’re okay; you can sit next to them. They aren’t going to hurt you.”

She looked over at the guys and then back at Daddy. She just didn’t think she was ready for that. Margery heard footsteps and turned around. Who else could be here? How many more guys were there? Was this Daddy’s house, or was it a community house?

Her mouth fell open as Officer Matthias walked into the kitchen. What was he doing here? Did Daddy know he was a police officer? Could Officer Matthias be undercover?

“Da—” She quickly stopped herself, remembering there were other people in the kitchen.

Even though Dahmere and Clinton both referred to Ethan as her Daddy, she still wasn’t comfortable saying it out loud. She could probably count on her hand how many times she had called him Daddy out loud. It wasn’t a lot.

“What is it?” he asked.

Margery continued to stare at Officer Matthias, not believing what she was seeing.

“Little one?” Daddy bent down. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s a cop!” She yelled.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

MARGERY

There was a short silence before Clinton and Dahmere started sniggering. She looked between the two of them and Daddy, not understanding why they were laughing. It wasn’t a joke. She knew Daddy was involved in some shady business. What if Officer Matthias was pretending to be a dirty cop, but in reality, he was just gaining evidence against him?

“Matthias? A cop?” Clinton chuckled. “Ain’t no way.”

She looked at Daddy. Maybe he would give her some insight. What was he thinking? She knew he was smarter than this, and yet it didn’t seem like he was. There was no reason to trust a dirty cop, even if they showed loyalty to a group. They could just be lying through their teeth.

Margery looked back at Matthias to find him staring at her already. She moved from foot to foot, not liking his attention. It was intense, like he was looking into her soul. Why was he glaring at her like that?

She took a step closer to Daddy and gripped his handharder than she ever had. Dahmere and Clinton were still chuckling every now and then.

“She thought he was a cop. Who thinks he’s a cop?” Dahmere laughed.

Did they not know Matthias was a cop? Did she just out him? Her eyes roamed up and down his body, trying to figure out whether he had a gun on him or not. How was she going to warn Daddy about it? Matthias was going to have much faster reflexes than her.

“He’s not a cop,” Daddy finally spoke.

She looked up at him in shock. What did he mean he wasn’t a cop? He had the uniform and answered when she called nine-one-one. Had Officer Matthias been lying to them?

“I promise he is a cop. He showed up at my door whenever I called nine-one-one. I’m not making this up. He really is a police officer,” she rushed out.

Nobody seemed to believe her on anything important she said. Officer Matthias didn’t her when she talked about Ethan stalking her. Adalisa didn’t either. Was anyone going to believe her? She was right every single time, but nobody could see it.
