Ethan was back.

A little different, okay, a lot different, but he was still her Ethan. The person she had fallen in love with and wanted to marry.

Now, he was in front of her, and it was like a second chance opened right in front of her. They could be together again.

Could she overlook what he had done and put her through? Margery didn’t know, and it was frustrating to her to no end.

“You should have left me living in the past.” Margery shook her head at Ethan.

“I was trying to keep you safe. I knew I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if anything happened to you. But it wasn’t possible in the end. I love you so much, and I know that you still love me,” Ethan explained.

“Why did you fake your own death?” Margery asked.

He still hadn’t explained what had happened. He was claiming that she was his and that he had got her back.

While that made her all warm and fuzzy inside, it didn’t answer any of her questions. Margery shouldn’t be this understanding or asking these questions. She should be trying to get away from him. But after knowing he faked his death, he owed her an explanation.

An explanation would allow her to move on if she wanted to, she would be able to without questioning her decisions.

“I’m the head of the Montgomery Syndicate.”

Her mouth fell open. She had heard about that group from Adalisa. Margery didn’t know how Adalisa knew, but she said everyone was ruthless, especially the boss.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not. I took over after my ‘death.’”

“How?”

That wasn’t a question she should be asking, but she was curious. How had he gotten himself into a situation like that?

“I started fighting on the underground once my mom died. I got more popular as every fight went on, and before I knew it, I was the King’s the best fighter. A lot more led up to that, but the gist of it was I didn’t want him as a boss, so I killed him and became the new one,” he explained. “It was really dangerous, and I knew that. I didn’t want to drag you into it, so I faked my own death to protect the people I love, you included. I changed my last name so that people would think I was a different person.”

“But you look the same?” Margeryquestioned.

“It adds an element. The people who knew me before my ‘death’ think they see a ghost. They don’t believe they really saw me, which works in my favor.”

Everything he said was making sense… to a point.

“Has it changed?” she asked.

“It hasn’t. And I know what you’re going to ask before. Why have I gotten you? I’m selfish, and I don’t want to wait any longer. You have always been mine, and I have always been yours. It was time we were together again, and I have made it possible.”

“Just let me go and live my life.”

Margery didn’t know if she would be able to do that now. If he let her go, she could have had a life with him. But could she get over who he was now?

That was the real question.

Could she forgive him for what he had done? Could she live with herself knowing he had killed people and was a bad person?

There were so many questions to ponder. Questions she thought she would never have to think about. They had never crossed her mind.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t. I’m selfish. I still have feelings for you, and I know you do as well.”

Margery shook her head. “I don’t.”

Ethan scooted closer to her. “You can keep telling yourself that, but your body tells me everything.”
