Page 98 of Years Between You

She shrugs, and sits up to take a sip of her wine. She’s using her chair as a table, and it’s rather amusing to watch.

“I don’t think I ate as much.”

I blurt out a laugh. “Yeah right! You went in for thirds and still finished before the rest of us."

“Who knew fake cheese could taste so good,” she mumbled.

I did. I knew that.

Standing from the table, Wyatt places his hand on Lacey’s.

“I think that’s our cue to leave. If I even look at any more food right now, I’ll burst.”

The rest of us agree.

We exchange hugs with him, and Lacey gives polite handshakes. The best Reya does from her position is slap both of their hands in an upside-down high five.

“Let’s make a habit out of this. It’s good to see you, man.”

“Yeah, we will. You guys have a good night.”

It’s quiet in the few moments after the front door closes behind them.

“Well you’re in no shape to drive, so good luck getting that burger,” Vic tells Reya as she stands from the table. She places a loving pat on her head as she passes.

“Oh, come on! You guys aren’t being any fun right now.”

“I don’t think any of us should be driving,” I tell her, having just topped off my own glass for the second time.

She eagerly points at Miles. “He can!”

I look to him, apologizing without words. I’m not going to—

“Yeah, sure. I can drive right now.”

What. The. Hell.

“Really?” I ask.

“Yeah, why not?”

I look between the two of them.

“More importantly, why?”

“For the sake of spontaneity,” Reya says and finally gets up from the floor. “Let’s go, buddy!”

I look to Vic, grateful to see she’s just as confused as I am. I’m starting to think Miles might betooperfect if such a thing is possible.

“If you change your mind, she’ll get over it in about ten minutes and be onto the next thing,” Vic tells him.

He laughs. “It’s not a big deal, there’s a drive-through around the corner. Are you guys coming?”

I quickly gulp down some of the wine I just poured.

“Well, of course I’m coming.” I narrow my eyes. “But you’re way too nice, you know that?”

“Might have been told before.”
