Page 70 of Years Between You

Her and her high standards. I’m not sure she knows that we’re going together, in the same car. I’m not ready to face her wrath for it either, but at least I know I won’t be alone in it.

The intensity in Miles’ gaze makes my heart leap to my throat.

“What’s that look for?” I rasp. Maybe he can see right through me, maybe he knows how dangerous that look really is, because he bows his head, breaking eye contact.

He shakes his head slightly.

“My self control is being tested here.” His tone of voice sends a shiver down my spine.

As if we’re not testing a lot of that every day.

“How?” I ask.

I watch his mouth pull up in the smirk that I go between wanting to wipe off or kiss off. It’s ruining me at this moment, as if everything he’s showing me is contagious. I don’t know if I haveanyself control left when it comes to him.

Squinting my eyes closed for a couple seconds, I try to take a deep breath. We have somewhere to be, and we won’t get there if I throw myself into his arms.

He’s much closer to me when I open my eyes, and I feel light headed when he leans forward.

We won’t get there if I faint, either.

His breath is hot above my ear, and if I was capable of sound right now, I’d probably moan. What he does to me without having to do much at all is dangerous.

“That dress,” he whispers. “Makes me want to rip it right off of you, and forget every reason I have not to.” A ghost of a kiss touches my cheek before he stands straight, and takes a step back.

He chose the worst time to decide that dirty talk was on the table.

"You definitely aren’t allowed to say that.”

The smallest lift of his shoulders is his answer. I move to stand before him again, closer than I should. I'm asking for trouble when I can't help but tip my head up and gaze into those beautiful brown eyes. I give him the softest smile I can, and return the kiss he gave me. Same spot.

It speaks volumes that I didn't have to stand on my toes to reach.

I take a step back before I ruin my makeup. It’s the only reason I can find to do so.

“Can you zip me up?”

The breath that whooshes from him almost destroys me, but he motions for me to turn around, and I do.

Once it’s done, and our tension is at the highest it’s ever been, I still somehow manage to step past him towards the front door.

"You look pretty hot yourself," I say.

The sounds of his footsteps instantly follow behind me.

It’s going to be a long night.

There are even more people here than I anticipated. It’s overly warm in the small space, and I’m shocked that Amelia didn’t host this elsewhere. It’s not as if people can flow outside where it’s cold and windy, the kind that makes your nose run and then freezes the snot.

Miles' comforting touch is keeping me grounded, with one guiding hand on the back of my arm. It couldn't be a better place, because it'll look fairly innocent when Amelia's eyes inevitably fall on us.

“Wow,” he says beside me.

I nod in agreement, feeling nervous.

“There were not this many people here last year.”

His phone goes off in his pocket, and he rolls his eyes when he grabs it and reads the name on the screen. I can see who it is in the reflection of his glasses.
