Page 28 of Years Between You

He takes his shot and doesn’t make it very far. It doesn’t seem like this is his game, but he doesn’t mind. He’s having fun, smiling, joking, getting along with my friends. They are eating up his every move.

I was really on to something when I invited him along.

“Six two, maybe?”

“Wow,” she responds blankly. Turning to me she adds, “My poor daughter has two short parents, but you could give yours a fifty-fifty chance, Autumn.”

“I’m going to pretend your head is a golf ball when we get up to the windmill.” There’s no bite behind my words, this is just Reya being Reya.

“Sounds exhilarating.” She winks at me,actuallywinks, because she’s the only person I know that can get away with it. It’s impossible to be upset with her.

We give up on marking down our scores after a while, but it’s obvious that Vic is kicking our butts. It’s likely due to the fact that she hasn’t had a single sip to drink, but has been rather encouraging when it comes to our own.

Sneaky little designated driver.

I wouldn’t say I’m drunk, but I can’t taste the cherry flavor in my drink anymore and I’m not slowing down. My focus has been everywhere other than the game itself.

It’s been mostly on Miles, actually. The man clearly takes care of himself. I appreciate his body and the definition of the muscles that I can make out through his sweater. The urge to grab them, feelthem, is a strong one.

Maybe I am drunk.

It’s a miracle that he doesn’t seem to notice my ogling, especially because Reya does. A fact she’s being pretty obvious about with the pleased look on her face, and the way her eyes keep darting back and forth between us.

I am so perfectly exhausted by the time we’re done and piling back into Vic’s car. I almost don’t even notice myself starting to lean against Miles’ shoulder, but my body sure does. My heart rate instantly spikes in a way that tells me I’m in dangerous territory before my brain can catch up.

I mumble an apology as I scoot myself away from him and back into my own seat. I don’t even know how I ended up sitting in the middle.

Reya’s voice interrupts my embarrassment, and we make eye contact in the rear view mirror that she’s clearly adjusted to get a good view of us.

“That was cozy! You two look so good next to each other.” A hiccup gives her pause. She really should take it as a sign tostop talking, but that would be too easy. “You’d make the cutest babies.”

Vic pulls the mirror back where she needs it with a chuckle.

I groan. “Reya, if you don’t shut up I’m going to–”

“What are you gonna do, babe?” She turns to show me the innocent look on her face and I can’t help but giggle. She twists a little further in her seat to peer at Miles. “I don’t hear any complaints from you.”

He puts his hands up in a surrender. “No comment.”

“That’s a comment in itself, my friend.”

I don’t let it be known, with my expression or with any words, but I’m thinking the exact same thing.

“Thanks for inviting me,” Miles says as we walk through my front door. His words are slightly slurred, and I grin at that. I don’t think I ever got to see him like this: drinking, letting loose. He knew how to have a good time, but years ago I would have thought he was too grown up for something like what we did tonight. It’s ironic now that he’s older, but my mind travels to how he said he was trying out new things. It makes me irrationally happy to be the person he’s trying new things with.

“I’m glad I did. That was a lot of fun.” I spin to face him, making myself dizzy. “You’re more than welcome to stay over. The couch is really comfy.”

I set my bag down on the floor, and then decide to sit down right there next to it. Partially out of laziness, partially because I’m gonna lose my mind if I don’t get these boots off. My feet want to breathe.

“That would be great.” He smiles in thanks.

“I’ll grab you a pillow and some blankets.”

As soon as I get these damned things off.

The boots aren’t the easiest to untie, and I struggle for what feels like forever with the knotted laces. Autumn from a few hours ago did not have present Autumn’s best interest in mind with the double knots.

Miles points towards the hallway with a question on his face, but I answer before he can ask. “Bathroom is the first door on the left.”
