Justin falls forward with a couple of coughs, holding the injured area with a grip that almost looks even more painful. Miles has a grin on his face, as he leans down to rustle Justin's blonde hair.

"I think you know what that's for."

He can't speak, still very clearly affected if his bright red face is any indication, but he nods. Miles tosses a wink over his shoulder, and I can't help the laugh that bursts out of me. I can't say I've ever had a man defend my honor before, but it feels fucking incredible.

I do wonder how much better it would have felt if I had dealt the blow.

Amelia sighs as she steps up to the scene, but doesn't look surprised or even upset.

"I'll get you an ice pack, dear. You two in the dining room, I'm about to set dinner out." She waves us over there as if anyone's in a hurry, but I know we're not.

I know that I've got all the time in the world to walk over to that table, to sit down next to the man I love, and to adjust to this new chapter with his family.

Ten Years Ago

I’m not surprised that Justin gave none of us a warning that his new girlfriend was going to be joining us for dinner. I’m not even the one cooking the food and I’m annoyed. I’m sure mom is feeling it even more. Why do teenagers have to be such little shits?

Of course I love my brother, but ever since he started high school he’s gotten on my last nerve. He’s moody and inconsiderate on a good day. Makes me really wonder what kind of girl could stand being around him long enough to date him.

She’s quiet so far, doesn’t seem super thrilled to be here. The two of them talk in hushed whispers. From what I gather just by looking at them, it’s not a fun conversation. I know fifteen-year-olds are good at that, making a problem where there isn’t one, but this would be a little soon for them to be arguing. He hasn’t told us how long they’ve been dating, and we only found out she existed a couple weeks ago. I doubt it’s been much longer than that.

“So you go to school together?” I ask, trying to make conversation. The second the words are out, her eyes widen like a deer caught in the headlights. The girl looks terrified. I didn’t think I was that intimidating.

Justin speaks before she can.

“Obviously. How else would I have met her?”

I ignore his bad attitude for now, I can always give him shit later.

“Classes together?”

“Just English.”

“I thought you hated that class.”

“I do. The teacher is a bitch.”

“When did you two start going out?”

“Last month.”

“Who asked who?”

“I did.”

“Are you gonna let her talk at all?”

“She’s shy, okay? Stop freaking her out.”

But the deer in the headlights speaks up.

“No, it’s okay. I’m not freaked out.”

I don’t know how it’s possible but saying the words has her appearing even more frazzled. I don’t think shy is the right word for her.
