Page 102 of Years Between You

I can’t even speak for a few moments, while trying to wrap my head around every ounce of bullshit that just came out of her mouth. Even when she gives me her expectant brow raise, I just stare back at her.

Justin is silent.

“Is it finally snapping into place? I want what’s best for you, Miles.”

I shake my head, over and over.

“No, mom.Noto everything you just said. She hasn’tluredme in at all.”

She frowns. “That’s what you believe right now, honey. Didn’t you once believe Kara was the love of your life? We’re all blinded by our feelings every now and then. I don’t want you to wake up in a few years and realize you’ve let this girl manipulate you.” Her eyes are an intense stare to solidify her matter-of-fact tone.

“No. You can’t compare the two of them. Isawthe red flags with Kara, and I actively chose to ignore them. Autumn is… she’s got the best heart. She’s a good person, who would rather try to ignore her feelings for me than upset you. That’s what was going on when you couldn’t get a hold of me. I was missing her, because ofyou. You got to her that night.” I realize my voice has gotten louder the more I’ve gone on so I pause to let out a shakybreath. “I personally don’t get it, if I were her I wouldn’t care how you felt. Not after the way you’ve spoken to her. She has no reason to respect you and yet shedoes.”

“Or it’s an act. Girls are good at that sort of thing.”

I’m so close to losing my patience.

I turn to my brother. “I think you’re the liar.”

“What?”

“Don’t play dumb. I overheard enough conversations to know you were in the wrong. What did you do?”

She called him a cheater. I know that much, and it makes my blood boil.

“I—” he stops, seeming unsure.

“Justin."

He glares at me like I’m about to ruin his life.

“What did you overhear?” he asks instead of answering. Except it is an answer.

I didn’t hear enough, apparently.

“What did you do?”

He scoffs. “She’s already told you, you just want to hear me say it.”

“Justin Thomas, if you don’t just say it already,” my mother snaps.

He’s wringing his hands and refusing to make eye contact with her. We’re the epitome of patience while he fights his internal battle. It’s been such a long time, there should be no reason for him to care anymore. I just want to move forward.

“I told you Autumn and I broke up,” he starts. “That time you found Isabelle at our house.”

“And?”

“We hadn’t. I was doing it behind her back.” His words come out rushed.

Mom shakes her head, her hand covering her mouth. I’m too frozen to react. Frozen, and shaking, and absolutely livid.

I could’ve guessed that’s what it was, but hearing it from him? The way he took advantage of and betrayed her, sounding like such simple words coming out of his mouth?

“You piece of shit.”

“I was a kid! I’d never do that now.”

There’s no way of knowing if it’s the truth, considering he married the girl he cheated on her with. I’m not a violent person, but I have to clench my fists to keep from hitting him.
