“What did you mean then? That statement’s not too open to interpretation.”

I huff out a breath, try to figure how to dig out of this mess I’ve made. Finally, I settle on the truth.

“C’mon, Colt. You have to know what people think, what they say.”

“Enlighten me.”

I swallow hard over the lump in my bone-dry throat, fervently wishing I didn’t already chug all my sweet iced tea.

“You know—that you’ve hooked up with every girl in town.”

“Not true.”

“Really? Name one girl you haven’t hooked up with.” I cock my head to the side and wait.

I don’t have to wait long.

“You.”

My face flames as Colt stares at me. I gnaw at my bottom lip, searching for something to say that won’t be totally embarrassing. Because believe me, I’ve spent more than enough time wondering why he’s never even looked in my direction.

I fold my arms over my chest. “Besides me.”

“Julia McFarland. Never touched her.”

“Fine. There’s one person besides me. Cool. I stand corrected.”

“Also, Gerta Douglas.”

“She’s seventy years old, Colt.”

“What, you’re not into age gap?”

I scrunch up my nose, trying not to picture Colt hitting on Gerta Douglas. “Are you? A forty-year age gap feels, I don’t know, kinda excessive.”

“Awfully judgey over there, Judy.” He chuckles and I’m happy the mood between us is a touch lighter than a second ago.

“I mean—you do you. But I was kind of thinking in our age group, give or take five years.”

Colt crumples up the wrapper from his sandwich, squishing the paper into a tight ball and knocking it into the trash can.

“What are you really trying to say here, Trix?”

“Just—let’s keep the sleeping arrangements on the down-low. Neither of us needs nor wants any rumors spreading around. I’m trying to start a business and you’re only passing through. Let’s keep the line between us drawn, neat and tidy.”

Colt presses his lips together, his dark brows squished together.

“Fine. I agree. Last thing I need is your brother kicking my ass for messing with his baby sister, anyway.”

Another irrational wave of disappointment crashes over me, but I squash it down.

“Deal.” I extend my hand for a shake to seal our agreement and Colt’s lips tip into a smirk, but he grabs my palm anyway.

Heat zips from my hand all the way up my arm, straight into my chest, and my breath hitches in my throat. He never breaks his smoldering gaze as we pump our hands in the air.

“Deal.” His low voice sends fluttery pulses straight to my core and I hate him even more.

For fuck’s sake.I’m losing my grip on reality, ever since I saw Colt Wild naked in the shower.
