Miraculously, she does as I ask. While she’s gone, I run the water in the sink, letting it heat up. A few minutes later, she’s back with the plastic container of green soap. I take it from her, squeezing a healthy amount into the toilet. She scrunches up her nose, watching me.

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to unclog the toilet. We’ll see if it works.”

I wait a few minutes, then take the pot from Trix and fill it with hot water from the faucet. Dumping the water into the toilet, I say a silent prayer and flush. The bright green liquid swirls around the bowl and disappears.

Mission fucking accomplished.

Trix gazes at me in awe, her eyes wide. “Wow. That was pretty impressive, Wild.”

She chucks me on the arm, and heat floods my system. I’m happy to not be standing in two feet of shit—but it also feels pretty good to have impressed her with my mad plumbing skills.

“Thanks. I may have picked up a few tricks here and there. We had a wonky toilet out at the homestead.”

“That was pretty clutch, not gonna lie. I guess maybe I’ll keep you around. Even if you do snore.”

“Shut up. I do not snore.”

“Says you. I’m the sucker that was listening to you saw logs all night long.”

“Well, I’m not owning up to snoring because I still think you’re full of crap. But if I do snore—it’s a small price to pay for my skills. Just sayin’.”

“Okay, okay. Don’t make me regret giving you a compliment, Wild. Let’s make a plan for this reno and get to work.”

CHAPTER 7

TRIXIE

Colt and I work hard all morning long, stopping only to eat a quick lunch outside.

“So—how long do you think you’re going to be in town?” I take a bite of my ham sandwich, the bright Georgia sun warm on my face.

Colt stretches his long legs out in front of him and shrugs. “Not sure. A while. Why? You already worried you’re not going to be able to live without me?”

His eyes glitter in the sunlight, more blue than green today, his dimple popping on his cheek.

Damn him for being so gorgeous.

I snicker. “No, not exactly. Just wondering when the squatter will be vacating my apartment.”

He scoffs. “More like your free labor, Trix. But if you’d rather pull up the rest of the linoleum yourself, by my guest.”

Ugh, he has a point there.

“I’m good. Just—let’s not tell everyone about the bed situation, okay? I’d rather my brother not hear about it.”

“You and me both. Besides, I have a reputation to uphold around town.”

My gut clenches, disappointment leaching in. Why, I have no idea, considering he’s agreeing to do exactly what I asked.

“Oh yeah? And whatreputationis that? The town manwhore?”

“Wow. Okay. Tell me how you really feel, Trix.” He scrubs a hand over his square jaw, hurt flashing across his face, and I immediately regret my choice of words. I mean, I do have to live with the guy for the next month at a minimum. I should probably be nicer.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

He locks his gaze on mine and heat flashes through me.
