“Suit yourself… Good luck finding the body.” I turned away.

It was make-or-break time for this plan.

CHAPTER21

Angela

I’d almost spitout my water when I saw Boone approaching the table. A blowup between him and Devlin was sure to make me collateral damage, damage that couldn’t be undone.

My attempt to warn him off with my eyes had failed. He kept coming. Even after all these years, he was still determined to fuck up my life.

Now he and Devlin were talking over in the corner—animatedly, but low enough I couldn’t hear. At least no fists were flying, and no knives had come out.

Then, Boone smiled my way and Devlin did the last thing I expected. He left the restaurant without so much as a glance back in my direction.

Boone didn’t ask permission when he pulled out the chair that moments ago had been Devlin’s seat. “That fuckwit won’t be back.”

“What the hell, Boone?”

“You’re welcome, by the way. He’s a complete jerk.”

“But I—”

“If you’ll hold on a second, I’ll explain, and then you can decide if you want to go back to screwing up your life with the little dick.”

Me? Was he fucking serious? “You’re the one fucking things up here. I was—”

“Selling yourself to Devlin,” he finished for me.

“You, of all people, have no right to judge me.” Composing myself, I set my fork down so I wouldn’t be tempted to jab it into him. “This was just dinner,” I added emphatically.

“With a neckline like that?” he motioned to my chest.

I tried to pull it closed to no avail. “I can dress however I want.”

“Trust me, whatever you’re trying to do, he’d raise the stakes. He wouldn’t stop at a single dinner after a view of that…” He gestured to my obvious cleavage. “…from across the table.”

My jaw dropped a tad. I didn’t have a comeback for the obvious flaw in my defense.

Boone huffed and then nodded. “So he already did.” He raised an arm and motioned to the waitress.

When Tawny, according to her nametag, arrived, Boone asked her to take Devlin’s plate and bring him an orange juice.

I waited until she was out of earshot and decided on the direct approach. “Dammit, Boone, I needed him to do me a favor. He wrote me a ticket that could lead to something bad happening, and now you’re ruining everything.”

“Tell me when you’re ready to listen. But first you have to promise me something.”

I rolled my eyes. “What?”

“If he ever comes on to you again, you’ll tell me.”

I sighed. “Okay.”

“Say it,” he demanded.

I nodded. “Yeah, I promise.”

“I have some options for you.” His tongue darted out to lick his lips.
