A few minutes later, my phone rang. I was disappointed to find it wasn’t Josh calling. The screen showed Detective Beal’s name, the detective trying to pin poor Maro’s murder on Lara.

“Hello, this is Nicole.” I answered.

“Miss Rossi, I have some news related to the case.”

“Yes?”

“We’ve made an arrest.”

I gasped, afraid they’d found Lara.

“We searched your neighbor Mr. Lenz’s property and located a bloody glove. The blood is from your…tenant, Mr. Tanaka, and Lenz has been arrested.”

I breathed a huge sigh. “So it’s over?”

“The DNA was a match, so yes, I would say so.”

For Lara’s peace of mind, I had to ask. “Do you think it was him six years ago?”

Winston sent a questioning glance my way.

Beal hesitated before answering. “We don’t have any evidence to tie him to that case, but it’s the most likely scenario, given the similarities.”

A heavy weight lifted off my chest. First Josh, and now not needing to be scared of every shadow on my property? All the stars just might be aligning.

“Thank you for the update. Could you please explain this to my security?”

“Security?” he asked.

I handed the phone to Winston. “Detective Beal, LAPD.”

He took it. “Winston Evers here… Yes, Hanson Security… And how solid is it?… What’s he being charged with?… And the previous case?… Thank you, detective.” He hung up the phone and handed it back to me.

“Does that mean you’re done?” I asked.

“I’ll talk to Josh. With what they’re charging him with, he won’t get bail, so I’d say you’re safe now.”

Relief flooded through me. I’d felt good hearing the detective’s words, but getting the all-clear from a professionally overprotective ex-FBI agent made it official. I dialed Dee’s number for my next task.

“I hear we have some good news to announce,” she answered before I could get a word in.

“Well, that’s true, but first, I need you to get a hold of Jenny and have all the stores change the banana price to a dollar a pound right now, and in the flyers.”

I wanted Lara back.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. And I mean right now. Nothing is more important.”

She sighed audibly. “I’ll take care of it. Now about that other thing.”

“I have to change clothes first,” I explained.

“Whatever you say, Ms. R.”

After we hung up, I realized I’d inherited both my father’s job and Dee’s title for him.

It felt right.
