Chapter 48

Josh

Saturday morning,my mouth watered as I turned the bacon.

It had been two days since Nicole had taken over at her family’s company and Dad had announced the changes at Benson Corp.

Constance and Winston were off protection since they’d verified that the neighbor, Lenz, was being held without bail for Tanaka’s murder.

Things between Nickels and me had gone back to where they’d been—even better now that we didn’t have to hide the relationship and could catch lunch together.

“Where’s Echo?” I asked when Nicole bounced into the kitchen.

“Same place as he is a lot of mornings—out digging a hole, trying to catch a ground squirrel.”

I turned and got a nice view of her ass as she opened the fridge. “Does he ever get one?”

“Nope, but not for lack of trying. Hey, we’re out of eggs again,” she complained, turning toward me.

My cock twitched at the sight of her nipples giving me a double-barreled salute through her T-shirt. “Want me to run out and get some?”

She bounced on her toes a few times. “Would you?”

She knew exactly what seeing her pokey nipples bounce under the thin shirt did to me. It was her trick to get me to say yes to anything she asked in the morning.

“Sure.” I turned off the gas. I kissed her and copped a feel through the cotton on the way to the door. “Anything else?”

“Grapefruit juice, bananas, celery, and peanut butter.”

On the way to my car, I recited the list to myself.

The Rossi’s was a little farther than another market, but the better quality was always worth it, I’d learned.

Once there, I made quick work of the short list and decided to add ladyfingers and mascarpone to my basket. Nicole had expressed an interest in trying to make homemade tiramisu last night, but we’d been short these ingredients.

My phone rang with Nick Knowlton’s name on it while I was in the checkout line.

“I have some results for ya, college boy.”

I held the phone with my shoulder while unloading my haul onto the conveyor belt. “Go ahead.”

“The thief was a Stephanie Quantell. Gary told us she was the previous CFO, and she’s left the company.”

“That’s right,” I told him as the cashier started ringing up my items. “You’re sure?”

“Why does everybody always ask that? I wouldn’t fucking give you a name if we weren’t positive.”

“Okay, I get it,” I said defensively. “How was it done?”

I pulled out my wallet and inserted my card into the reader while the cashier bagged my items.

“It’s complicated and technical. Katie would need to explain it, if you want to know.”

The machine beeped at me, and I removed my card. “Maybe later.” The cashier added my receipt to the bag.

“The money’s where we can’t get to it today, but I can set up a tripwire and we might catch it on the way out.”

I hefted the bag. “Where is it?”
