“Whatever.” She looked out her window, her expression hidden from me.

I turned onto her street a minute later.

“Thank you,” she said, catching my eye.

“For what?”

“For caring.”

“Just looking out for my career,” I said before realizing I should have held my tongue. I pulled to the curb at the first available space a few houses beyond hers.

She didn’t wait for me to get out and instead, like a petulant child, opened her door.

I stopped the engine and set the brake. “Wait.”

She ignored me and climbed out. “Wouldn’t want to inconvenience you.”

My mouth had clearly gotten me in trouble again. I climbed out to find a man approaching on the sidewalk from the direction of her house.

She’d started down the street and was almost to him.

I ran. “Wait, Sugarbear.”

She stopped and turned. “Why?”

The man continued walking in her direction.

“I need to kiss you,” I yelled as I raced up.

Her mouth dropped open.

I reached her just before the man did and pulled her to the street side. I turned her and shielded her from the stranger with my body.

The man walked by.

I lifted her off her feet and turned us so I could see the man as he walked off. “Don’t do that again,” I whispered into her ear.

“What?”

“We have no idea what SMK looks like. That could have been him. I told you to wait for me.”

“Don’t be silly. That was Mr. Ornacost from down the street.”

I let her go, took her hand, and we walked toward her house. “Still, don’t do that again.”

She stopped. “You forgot something.”

I looked back toward the car. “No I didn’t.”

She smiled with a slight tilt of her head. “Yes, you did.”

I couldn’t get enough of that smile.

She set her purse down on the ground. “Now think hard.” She moved closer and looked up, seemingly daring me to back away.

My brain fog cleared, and I encircled her with my arms. “Is this what you had in mind?”

“Almost.” She snaked a hand behind my neck and pulled herself up.
