Jennifer snorted. “Bullshit,” she mumbled.

“Impressive,” Daddy answered.

I pointed at Adam. “He stopped a pair of men that killed eight women in this town, including women I worked with.”

Daddy cocked his head. “I get it already.” His gaze settled on me. “And why are you putting on the hard sell, young lady?”

I glanced at Adam.

He fingered his left hand. “Aren’t you underdressed, Sugarbear?”

“Now?” I asked.

Adam nodded, and Daddy looked perplexed by our exchange.

I pulled the ring from my pocket.

“Because,” Adam started. “I asked her to become Kelly Cartwright.”

Daddy’s jaw dropped halfway to the floor. “You’re Carson’s son?”

Adam nodded. “Not that it should matter, but yes.”

I slipped the ring on my finger and held it out. “And I said yes.”

Daddy regained his composure as he turned back to Adam. “I take it you’re not asking my permission?”

Adam slid sideways to put his arm around me. “No, sir. But your blessing would be appreciated.”

Daddy looked between the two of us for a moment. “For twenty years, I’ve blamed your uncle for what happened to my young niece.” Daddy rubbed his goatee. “But it wouldn’t be right for me to hold that against you.” A smile grew slowly on Daddy’s face, and he nodded. “Kelly, I like this one. He has backbone.”

I waited for his answer.

“Of course you have my blessing.” He held up a warning finger. “But if you hurt her…” He didn’t finish the threat.

“You don’t need to worry about that,” Adam answered.

I giggled. A bruise from doing it up against the wall wouldn’t count.

Daddy sipped more of his brown sludge. “Who’s up for dinner, then?”

“I have to get home,” Rylie said as she backed toward the door. “See you next week?” she asked Adam.

“First thing tomorrow,” he responded.

As we headed for the door, Daddy put his hand on Adam’s shoulder. “What kind of coffee is this you have? I like it quite a lot.”

“St. Helena beans.”

That night, after Daddy had gone back to his hotel, we returned to the house, our house.

Dead tired after the last two days, I climbed under the covers and snuggled up to my man, my fiancé, my everything. “I thought tonight went well.”

“A lot easier than I expected. Your old man is not half bad.”

I jabbed him. “Not half bad?”
