“Sure. I’ll have some.”

“Rylie?” I asked.

“Nothing for me, thanks.”

I started tea for myself and coffee for Daddy.

“Rylie, you work with Adam?”

She glanced toward me.

I nodded. There was no sense trying to hide the obvious.

“Yes. We’re both in the local field office,” she said.

“Quite an exciting job being an FBI agent, I suppose.”

“It has its days,” she answered shyly.

Daddy had shifted into interrogator mode. “And are you here because my daughter is still in danger?”

“No, sir. I’m here because Adam wanted me here.”

“Is he your boss?”

“Daddy, stop it,” I complained.

She snorted. “It’s okay. No, he’s not my boss; he’s my partner.”

I handed Daddy his coffee. “You can stop with the questions now.”

“I’m just trying to learn why you’ve been hiding him from me.”

Rylie came to my rescue. “Adam is a man I respect, and one you should be proud your daughter has found.”

Daddy nodded and smiled at me. “Can’t wait to meet him.” He sipped his coffee. “This is quite good. You really should try it.” He lifted his cup to me.

“You know better than that,” I responded.

The sound of the front door deadbolt being opened said Daddy wasn’t going to have to wait any longer.

“Sugarbear?” Adam called.

“In the kitchen,” I said. “We have company.”

“Really?” Adam appeared at the entrance to the kitchen.

Daddy approached and extended his hand. “Lloyd Benson.”

I was right in assuming Daddy wouldn’t recognize Adam as his arch-enemy’s son.

Adam shook with him and managed a nervous smile. “Mr. Benson, you surprised us.”

“I couldn’t stay away when I heard what had happened.” Daddy continued shaking Adam’s hand. “I want to thank you for keeping my baby girl safe.”

They broke the handshake.

“All in the line of duty,” Adam responded.
