“First you screw up that SMK drop and shoot a suspect that should be in custody, and then you go and blow a huge operation by falling fucking asleep.”

When he put it that way, it sounded bad even to me.

“You’re suspended.”

I wasn’t sure I’d heard him correctly. “What?”

“Deaf as well as stupid?”

I didn’t attempt an answer.

“You’re suspended for the rest of the week. We’ll talk on Friday and see where to go after that.”

I tried to swallow, but my throat was too dry.

“Now get out of my sight.”

I stood and retreated from his office.

None of the other agents on my team met my gaze as I looked around, except for Rylie.

When the elevator arrived, I punched the button for the garage level, and the doors closed.

Would this be my last view of the inside of this building?

I’d failed utterly, and had nobody to blame but myself.

Chapter 43

Kelly

Mr. Heiden arrivedin the early afternoon. After we all welcomed him back and expressed sorrow at his loss, he shooed us away and locked himself in his office. He didn’t come out for almost two hours, and when he did, I was his first stop.

“Benson, I want to see you.”

I followed him to his office.

“Shut the door.”

I did and took a seat.

His eyes were dark and cold, but how should they be after losing his mother?

“While I was out, you…” He seemed to search for what to say next.

“Mr. Krause asked me to handle things while you were gone.”

“You took over,” he said. “You, of all people, should have known better.”

I blinked and searched for the underlying meaning in his words without luck. The office was colder than I remembered. I folded my arms. “But Mr. Krause—”

“Doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground.” The anger in his tone was uncharacteristic for Heiden. The loss clearly still hung over him.

I nodded, agreeing in general with his assessment of Krause, and hoping that would calm him. His opinion on the big boss wasn’t one he’d shared before.

“It wasn’t right,” he hissed. His finger tapped an angry staccato on the desk. He’d suddenly become the rhino you didn’t want to piss off. “Let’s get started.”

Task by task, we reviewed the notes I’d left for him.
