“You should have known better,” he said for the fourth or fifth time when he disagreed with a decision I’d made in his absence.

After the next one, I’d had enough. “Krause put me in charge while you were gone. I didn’t ask for it, and I didn’t want it.”

He looked back at me blankly, apparently not registering my words. “Let’s go on to the next.”

We did, and after two more minor items, we reached the end of my notes for him.

I stood. “Is there anything else you want to yell at me about?”

He rubbed his temples. “You should leave.”

As I closed the door behind me, I decided to take him literally and go home.

Kirby walked toward me as I closed Heiden’s office door.

“You don’t want to go in there,” I warned her.

“That bad, huh?”

“Enter at your own risk.”

She held up a sheet of paper. “I have to get him to sign this.”

While I packed up my purse to head home, I could hear Heiden rip into Kirby, even with the door closed. With my desk locked for the night, I left the ogre behind.

I satin my car in the garage and leaned my head on the wheel for a moment. Closing my eyes, I took several deep breaths.

My funk over Kelly had now fucked up my career. No… I’d fucked up my career. The Bureau didn’t have much tolerance for the kind of screw-up I’d been the last two weeks.

Banging on the passenger window startled me, and my hand went to the butt of my gun.

Rylie rapped on the window again. “Open up.”

I rolled down the window. “What?”

“Are you going to make me stand out here?”

I hit the unlock button.

She slid into the passenger seat.

“What?” I asked.

“Well, I’m fine, thank you. How are you?”

I sighed. “I have to get going.”

“Somewhere important to rush off to?”

I didn’t answer her smart-ass question.

“Like Tommy’s?”

“Yeah. At least there I don’t have to put up with mouthy busybodies.”
