This message creeped me out as much as the first one. The repetitive reminders of the grisly fate that had befallen Melinda Brooks was worse than having a gun pointed at me. A gun would be mercifully swift. I couldn’t hold back the chill that wracked me.

Adam finished reading and put his arm around me.

I huddled close to him. “I have to call my boss and tell him I found these.”

He turned me to face him with a frown. “No way.”

I pulled back.

Adam had no concept of how much trouble I was in between Heiden and Krause. I could lose my job. I couldn’t keep these hidden.

“Call Yolanda right now, and let me talk to her.”

“But they think I helped steal these.”

“Call Yolanda. Now.”

“But—” I stopped mid-sentence, realizing I’d gotten myself into another no-win argument with DA-mode Adam, and it was time to try it his way.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Yolanda, who would be somewhere on the west coast now.

The call went to voicemail.

“She’s not picking up,” I told Adam.

“Try a text and tell her to call you right now. You have information about the jewels. I need to talk to her.”

I typed a semblance of the message he wanted.

ME: Call me ASAP, found where exhibit jewels are

Adam leaned against the table. “SMK works in your building. If you call in to tell them about these, he’ll probably find out. We can’t risk that.”

It took less than twenty seconds for my phone to ring with Yolanda’s name on the screen.

Adam held his hand out.

Kelly handed me the phone.“Yolanda, thanks for calling. This is Adam.”

“What do you know about the jewelry?” she asked.

“Are you where you can talk?”

“I just stepped out of a meeting with the owners. What can you tell me about them?”

“Good. We’ve found the pieces—”

“Where?”

To slow this down, I took time for a breath. “Never mind about that. I need to talk to you and them together.”

“I can tell them they’ve been found, right? All of them?”

“Slow down. I need to talk to all of you together.”
