“Sugarbear, stop arguing and get your butt over here.”

Chapter 31

Kelly

To assert my independence,I stopped by the fridge and pulled a Diet Pepsi out before returning to the table.

His two big hands hid something. “Sit down.”

I took a chair even though I didn’t feel like it.

“Look what I found.” His hands lifted to show the most gigantic yellow diamond.

If I hadn’t been sitting, I would have fallen over at the sight. “Where?” I squeaked.

“His hand went into my purse and extracted a ruby-and-diamond necklace. “Under the lining of your purse.”

“No way. I didn’t put those there.”

He let out an exasperated sigh. “I know that. Are these the ones that went missing?”

“Yolanda said five in total.” I pointed at the large yellow stone. “That has to be the Isadora Diamond, and that one thePretty Womannecklace.”

He fished into the bottom of my purse, coming out with another necklace.

When I picked it up, I was certain the Heart of the Ocean necklace fromTitanicwas the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. Of course it wasn’t the one Kate Winslet had worn in the movie. That had been costume jewelry. According to Yolanda, this was the real thing, a monster sapphire surrounded by real diamonds, and worth a literal fortune.

Adam pulled another out. “These are what he was after, not the SIM cards.”

I still had a burning question. “How’d they end up in there?”

He pulled out the fifth. “That’s the last of them. Pretty ingenious, I think. You said your job was to watch the exit guards?”

“Audit. Yes, and I’m sure they didn’t let anything get by.”

“The question is, who audits the auditor? You’d be the last person anyone would check for contraband.”

“And these have been in there since Saturday?”

“It’s brilliant, actually. You carry them out without a clue you’re doing it, so you won’t be acting nervous. SMK steals the purse Monday morning and nobody’s the wiser as to how these left the building, not even you. But switching purses screwed him up, so he ransacked your house looking for them. He’s probably getting pretty desperate. Let’s see that message now.”

He followed me to the laptop.

The message was still on the screen.
