She blinked and was blinded by a light above her.

“Shit, hang on, let me turn the light off.” She heard Ace say.

He took her hand. “Okay, sweetheart, open those eyes.”

She blinked again, then again, before things started coming into focus. Her mouth felt dry, and her body felt numb.

The more she looked around, the fuzziness started to wear off, and then the most beautiful thing came into view.

She smiled. Well, at least she attempted to.

“Hey, sweetheart,” Ace said as he leaned down kissed her gently on the lips.

Suddenly, a thought raced into her mind.Kendra and Kara.

“The girls.” She croaked out. “Are the girls okay?”

Ace took her hand and calmed her. “The girls are fine. They’re both safe, thanks to you.”

“Oh, good.”

She opened her eyes and stared at Ace. “How long have I been asleep?”

“Almost three days.”

She processed that. It took a minute for her brain to fire.

“Our wedding. We missed our wedding.” She started to cry.

Ace cupped her face in his hands. “Baby, please don’t cry. I promise you that as soon as we get home, you and I will get married. The important thing is that you are alive.”

There was a knock on the door, and they both turned and saw a nurse. She smiled and walked over to the bed.

“It’s great to see you awake,” she told Alex.

Alex smiled. “It feels good to be awake.”

She handed Alex two pills, and Alex looked at them. “What are these?” She asked.

“Prenatal vitamins that the doctor prescribed.”

Alex knew that she wasn’t firing on all cylinders, having just awakened, but she could’ve sworn that the nurse just said prenatal vitamins.

Alex looked at her and tried to hand the pills back. “Ummm…I think you have the wrong patient. I’m not pregnant.”

Alex glanced at Ace, and he shook his head as if saying he didn’t know what was going on.

She looked back at the nurse, who looked confused. The nurse then rechecked Alex’s hospital bracelet.

“This says you’re Alexandra Hardesty, and that matches the name on the medicine.”

Just then, a doctor entered the room.

He smiled. “I heard someone was awake.”

Alex smiled. “Finally.”

The doctor chuckled then patted her hand. “You’re a very lucky young lady.”
