She had so much respect for the men and women who even attempted the program.

The unexpected meeting with her mother had taken a toll on her mentally. She still couldn’t believe that she had remarried another Naval Officer or the fact that she had two daughters. She lowered her head and closed her eyes.

The buzzing of her phone drew her out of the fog she was in. The name flashing across the screen made her heart skip a beat, and tears welled in her eyes. She’d do anything to have Ace with her right now. She swiped the screen connecting her to the man who owned her heart completely.

“Hi,” she greeted him.

“Hey, sweetheart,” his voice was low, and she knew that he already knew about the run-in with her mom.

“I guess Tink called you?” She asked.

“Derek did.”

Alex wasn’t surprised. She figured Tink would call Derek. She actually wondered how Derek took it. Even though Derek taught her about forgiveness, Derek was known to hold grudges when it came to certain people, and her mother was one of them.

“Are you okay?” Ace asked her.

“I’m actually doing better than I thought I’d be. Then again, that could be because of the two drinks I had before walking down the beach.”

“You’re at the beach?”

“Yeah.”

“Isn’t it getting dark there?”

“I’m good. Tink is watching my six.” She smiled and turned her head back toward the hotel, and there was Tink, sitting on the pool deck. Any other person would think he was looking at the beautiful view in front of him, but she knew it was her he was watching. She would guarantee that if anyone came within twenty or so feet of her, he’d be at her side in a heartbeat.

“I wish I was there with you,” he told her.

“I wish you were here too.”

“How’s Zuma?”

“He misses you too.”

She smiled to herself.

“Ace?”

“Yeah, babe?”

“You know I love you, right?”

“Of course. Why would you even ask that?”

She sighed. “I think running into my mom made my mind go all wonky. I just want you to know that I’m not her. I would never leave you.”

“Alex…sweetheart. That never even crossed my mind. I don’t ever want to hear you compare yourself to that woman.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. You are an amazing woman. I know I tell you that all the time. It would help if you started believing that.

She grinned. “You’re so sweet. You know that?”

He chuckled. “Sweet, huh?”

“Yep, because I could just eat you up.”
