Following the magical sound, he stood outside the door to the rec room and smiled at the sight of Jazz passing out pieces of banana bread.

“I hope you saved me a piece,” he grumbled, watching the slices disappear fast. The guys he worked with were greedy fuckers, some of them taking more than one piece despite his glares.

“I did,” she promised, hustling over to give him a quick kiss. “I also made an extra loaf just for you. It’s waiting for you, safe and sound, at home.”

He looped an arm around her waist and snuggled her close. “I thought you were working at the clinic late tonight?”

“I was going to, but Janelle needed the shift more than me. They were all shot appointments anyway,” Jazz said with a shiver and a wrinkle of her nose. “I hate making babies cry. Plus, I need to clean out the fridge at the apartment. I’m pretty sure my milk expired a month ago and damage control is needed before things start walking around on their own.”

“You’re going to sleep over still, right?” Leo didn’t care if he was at the station or not, Jazz belonged in his bed.

She lifted an eyebrow at him. “Does it matter if I sleep at my apartment?” she asked.

“Who’s going to walk the dog?”

Jazz looked at him as if he’d lost his mind. “You don’t have a dog.”

“I could get one. That would give me an excuse to have you there all the time,” Leo offered, flashing her the dimples she was always talking about. “You wouldn’t be heartless enough to leave a puppy alone all night long, would you?”

“Are you asking me to move in with you?” she breathed, her eyes wide.

“Yeah,” he answered, watching her expression change from shock to something he wasn’t sure how to interpret.

The entire room was silent as the group of tough, muscled firefighters eavesdropped like little old ladies in a knitting circle.

“Are you sure?”

Leo looked past her shoulder at the guys leaning closer to hear her words. A few casually looked away before their gazes darted back without shame.

He ignored them all. This wasn’t how he’d planned to do things but there was no stopping it now.

“I don’t think there’s ever been a better idea in the history of the world.” He reached up and cupped Jazz’s cheek. Running his thumb over the soft skin, he looked straight into her eyes. “This isn’t how I’d wanted to ask but none of that matters now.”

“Leo?”

“I want to wake up every single morning with you by my side. I’ve wanted it for a while now. What do ya say?”

She bit her lip, staring up at him for longer than he’d like before nodding.

“I’d love to move in with you.”

Jazz jumped in his arms when the crowd around them cheered.

“Dear lords, you guys.” She shook her head at the group before turning back to him with a big smile on her lips. She pinched his side. “That was pretty ballsy, you know?”

“I knew my woman wouldn’t let me down,” he teased, leaning down to nibble at her neck.

She hugged him close. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

“You’ve already dealt with one crazy roommate,” he reminded her. “We can move things this weekend.”

“Whoa there, trigger. I still need to check my lease.” Jazz held up her hands as if to slow him down.

“I’m able to help with the cost of breaking your lease early if we need to,” he promised, unwilling to let a piece of paper stall things. “Let me know what I need to do, and we can get this moving along.”

“There’s so much to do,” she said, her brow furrowing as she thought about it.

“It’s going—” Leo’s words were cut short by the fire alarm ringing. The sound had everyone moving immediately. “Babe, we gotta go.”
